A friend in the news

Post by whitestone »

Not a sad tale but a celebration https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cumbria-66864754

I've known her for over forty years. Her husband was one of the leading Lakeland climbers in the 1960s. She (and he) invited us on a trip to Kenya in 1989/90. Unfortunately she contracted pulmonary oedema on Mt. Kenya and had to be evacuated. As we were carrying her down to the rescue helicopter (on christmas eve) she noted that it "wasn't as bad as last year". "Err what happened last year?", "I was looking for bodies after Lockerbie"

A similar tale to many other mountain rescue people though - does make you wonder if the message about not going up a big hill with crap kit will ever get through...

It'll never get through Phil. Mate of mine recently told me how he goes up Ben Nevis only when the wether is good. Doesn't mind the cold but never goes when it's gonna rain. Asked him what waterproof jacket he takes and from the sounds of it, he doesn't carry one. Conversations was finished just after that (before I started sounding too much like a nagging mum).
