Re: Fat Fighters '23
This is really interesting so thanks for the info ! My lad is very big (35 stone) and has terrible sleep apnea ... turns out the apnea may " CAUSE/ be a factor in" the weight gain !Moder-dye wrote: ↑Sun Jan 29, 2023 9:34 am There's no doubt losing excess weight is good for us, but on the apnea side it would appear that there isn't a very strong link with OSA. A London ENT consultant I was following on YouTube due to my snore/sinus etc issues has a video where he goes through the stats of (I think 2000+) of his own patients and it's not a big factor. Skinny people have sleep apnea, fat people don't, the majority who do are distinctly average in the BMI stakes. Don't get me wrong he's not saying don't lose weight if you need to, just don't think it's the cure for OSA.
Found the video... https://youtu.be/rdR8SVCeSJg
He actually has a lot of useful videos for us airway challenged people. I got some airmax nasal dilators on the back of one of his videos and they make a massive difference to me sleeping and nose breathing. Annoyingly for me my deviated septum is still far from right despite an op on it years ago and so they make my nose quite sore after a few nights. My wife says I snore and death gurgle a lot less when I do use them.
Info re the video and the dilators duly passed on to Mitch.

Yeh OSA apparently can mess with various hormones including insulin and cortisol which can make it easier to put on weight and make losing weight harder. I think I remember that you're also more likely to be drawn to foods with fat and sugar in them.
Also psychologically if you're tired and depressed it makes comfort eating all the more appealing (does for me anyway!).
Best of luck with helping your son.

Cheers. He's been coming walking with me fairly often and is up to a couple of miles now which for a big fella is a reasonable start.Moder-dye wrote: ↑Mon Jan 30, 2023 11:45 am Yeh OSA apparently can mess with various hormones including insulin and cortisol which can make it easier to put on weight and make losing weight harder. But he just falls asleep ALL the time as he never gets quality sleep at night. Vicious circle.

It's good going .. this is why I don't much like weighing in in kg ... they're quite big units! 0.4kg is not far off a lb and a lb a week is fine !

Now the WRT entry is in I feel more motivated.
Start of the year 99.8kg, now 99.7kg. 3months to go :)
Why is this so hard?

Re: Fat Fighters '23
I have noticed it's WAY easier to stack weight on than get it off ! I'm walking minimum 10,000 steps / 5 miles a day EVERY day, Saturday I did 31,000.... not drinking beer, other than a couple of Friday or Saturday otherwise dry, I'm veggie, cook everything from scratch etc.... yet the weight seems very reluctant to shift ...Smcknighty wrote: ↑Wed Feb 01, 2023 12:08 pm Now the WRT entry is in I feel more motivated.

I'm hoping as the weather (hopefully) improves, I'll get out on the bike and that'll help.
I agree re having WRT to aim for, I'd like to get 150miles a month in before it....only manage 75miles in January ..
Weigh in tomorrow, but not hopefully as it was my birthday last week and the celebrations were probably excessive. For me.

Just over half a stone in a month, pleased with that. Especially as I haven't had to make many changes, slight cut in booze, slight increase in exercise, choosing healthier options a little more often.

Jan 1st 100kg 15st 9.5lb
Jan 12th 98.5kg 15st 7.0lb
Jan 19th 97.7kg 15st 5.5lb
Jan 26th 96.84kg 15st 3.5lb
Feb 2nd 96.84kg 15st 3.5lb
I weighed yesterday too and was down 3/4lb and was going to use that but was back at last weeks weight today so sod it.
Still yoga'ing & 60 press-ups a day, still dry 5 or 6 nights a week, still walking 10,000+ every day which is about 5 miles that's actually going out for a walk , not just pottering about. I'm on a 22 day streak on that.
It's all a bit galling really.
But it's still down nearly half a stone so far.... which is good !

Well done to those still keeping to their goals.

I'm weighing in tomorrow as we've been away visiting family for the last week along with a funeral.
I'm not expecting great news after buggering my ankle again last Saturday, so I've mainly been sat feet up keeping my doiting Mam company. We'll see...

20/01/23 74.1kg
27/01/23 73.4kg
03/02/23 73.1kg
34.5km run since the last weigh in and 0.3kg lost. I'm eating better in general now the christmas excess has gone and the exercise is going well. I'm not sure how I'm going to fit some cycling in between all the running but my cardio should be good for the WRT if nothing else.

Re: Fat Fighters '23
Let’s do something fun. Subtract your current weight from your first weigh in weight and Google “what weighs x” and post the results. It’s fun but really solidifies you’re making good progress as you have something to compare it to.

Love these weight things haha. Good stuff all.
