I have a leg length difference which is quite significant at around 1inch due to birth defect that rotated my hips, I have managed so far by different foot positions on the bike but its not very practical. If I were to put a flatter pedal on the longer side and a thicker pedal on the short side would it compensate any? or am I talking hogwash?

all the articles on the net talk about moving cleats and shims but I only use flats

I would appreciate any help or other ideas that are not massively expensive :(

You could try different length crank arms???

If you're saying that you just need to move one crank closer to the seat by an inch that would be a start. May give you a couple of mm's

Have you also looked at running with one long crank and one short one?
Could give you 10mm

(Having said that I could be taking total bobbins)

Same idea, Middleburn do rs7 cranks in lengths 160 up to 180 so you could get up to 20mm difference. I would drop them a mail and see if you can buy an odd set.

If using cleats, how about lemond wedges? Designed for said cyclist after his hunting accident left him with one leg shorter

Hi Todge, I think the crank option is going to be the best solution. If you don't mind buying second hand then it will probably be the cheapest too as you already have one crank of the right length. Buying another crank of the same model shouldn't prove too difficult either. Happy cycling.

Depending on the design / style of your cranks ... it's possible to shorten a crank arm. You just need to re-drill / tap a new pedal thread 20mm - 25mm lower. It's something I did for someone many moons ago and it worked fine.

If it's not something you fancy doing yourself, any engineering outfit should be able to do it for a few quid. However, they might not have the correct size tap but you can buy a pair quite cheaply.

Lets you try it to see if it helps to solve the issue before you go down the route of buying new cranks/drilling your existing ones.

They seem to be popular for modifying tandems to allow kids to ride them, so it may be worth posting something up on STW/Tandem forums to see if anyone has an old pair laying around that you can have cheap/free

All fantastic advice there, Restlessnative seems to have hit the nail on the head so I will try that, the chap in the link is not making them at the moment so I will go with Chew and see if I can source something second hand..Thank you :D
