3D Printing

Whilst searching the net for bike packing stuff I came across this 3D printing site with lots of files for various items some of which look very useful. I haven't got a 3D printer but f I knew the product would be fairly good I would consider trying 1 or 2 items if I could find someone with a suitable 3D printer.
2 Q's:

1) Anybody any experience or knowledge of using a site like this one? The items look good but no telling for me if the print file will produce anything resembling the pictured item.
2) Anybody here with a 3D printer or access to one who would be willing to try it out for me? I would be willing to pay.

A quick Google shows yeggi is perhaps the biggest of any site for indexed 3D item files with about 89% of them free.

The site links to thingyverse which is the go to site for 3D printing. You download a file from there into a software package which formats it for your printer. There is some faff in getting your printer setup and finding the right settings that work for you. It is definitely not plug and play but once you’re setup it’s relatively easy to do prints.

Pick something smallish from the site and I’ll print you an item from there

Is that price about right?

I don't have any experience ref 3D printing but £100 seems a lot to spend on something which although looks good might not turn out to be that good if you get my drift . If you could see reviews of the design and how it works in real life, I guess it would be less risky to splash the cash. However, if it turns out to not be ideal, i would be rather pis##d off at that sort of price.
I thought the attraction of 3D printing was that you could get stuff a fair bit cheaper than branded products etc.
However, I'm after something similar to what you want, so please update here as to how you get in and whether it's any good

No, but my experience with genuine extrex mounts (thanks Escape _Goat) and copies (Thanks for nowt Ebay] is the copies have a 'undocumented' self eject feature . there is little observable difference between them, but on the proper item the locking clip is more positive and engages. , the clone doesn't click on.

It might be worth considering making a MYOG mount. getting the Garmin K-edge disc- fixed onto a proper Extrex mount .

I was actually thinking that the reverse adapter would be handy too - Edge 1/4 turn onto Etrex/Oregon mount.

That would be bulky. Get a scrap Extrex GPS and take it from the with the case?

The neatest way to do it would be to print a new battery cover with the quarter turn interface built onto the bottom. However, drawing such a thing in 3D is totally beyond me.

Always puzzled me why Garmin themselves don't offer such an option. The only possible thing to watch out for is that the centre of gravity of the Etrex and Oregon models isn't halfway along the body, you'd need to adjust where you had the quarter turn part to align with the CofG.

Basically one of these with the male quarter turn interface integrated to it. There’s a design on Shapeways here for one that screws on to the stock battery cover, which is an option I suppose, but integrated seems more reliable.

As Bob says, some thought required on how far along the length of the unit to have the mount point.

Similar story, yes. I’d say that was the embryonic thinking that lead to the MC Deck setup. Four years later, the MC Deck has many fans but options for Etrex mounts haven’t advanced to any great extent.
