A short ride with Reg

Post by whitestone »

With a rather poor forecast for the weekend I received an invite to show Reg "my manner" whatever that meant.

Friday evening and a request from Reg for a bivy spot. I suggested the barn that we'd used for the 2019 winter bivy.

That didn't go as planned - he'd had to share it with a couple of dead sheep! Yet he still he was waiting for me at the café in Settle. After a bit of a chat with the shop owner we headed out into the grey.

Image

Knowing Reg's love of our industrial past I remembered the Hoffman Kiln at Langcliffe, cue Reg looking wistful ...

Image

Image

I'd only actually looked at the kiln itself before but there's quite a bit of other stuff to check out.

Having sent him to the top of a hill for his bivy he wasn't keen on much hill climbing so we headed up the dale to Horton. The first café was shut (it was raining) as was the second (long term serious illness). Fortunately I knew of a third - that was open. Just as well as the rain turned torrential so we tarried a while. Then a while more.

Image

Eventually we headed back out and yet further up the dale. The weather wasn't any better.

Image

Now Reg also has an interest in caves so we headed to the entrance to Calf Holes.

Image

Still rather wet!

Time to start heading back and the last real climb of the day. That didn't go as planned ...

Image

Then it was mostly downhill back to Horton.

Image

The rain was now even heavier and we just headed back to Settle and another café. All too soon it was time to leave our hero to another evening entertaining the regulars at The Talbot Arms.

Aye that were A Grand Day Out, our Bob :-bd . Many thanks for showing me round your manor . I really enjoyed it  .

By gum it were right moist indeed. The Rain God was on overtime.

Live sheep tonight. The girls are keeping me awake! It's absolutely bucketing down outside. I really feel bad not letting them in to share my bed (*). It is their shed after all!

(*) Pub Lady never turned up. I've been stood up. Absolutely no idea what could have put her off. The sheep might have to be a second best.

Been looking forward to this write up since you posted '2 boners' on your strava title as I had a feelijg it was Reg (from the BAM thread and what he'd written).

Anyway, the opening 'show reg my Manner' was worth the wait. Nice ride bob and Reg...

I arrived a little later than expected on the Friday and went off for a quick explore up Crummack Dale before teatime. There were some interesting greenlanes and tracks on the map which took me about 3 hours to nose around, and clockwise turned out to be the best direction to go. I was gratified to discover a large number of fords so that made the tour all the more interesting. Here's a small selection. If you don't like fords, a/ skip the photos, b/ commiserate with yourself for missing some quality entertainment  .

Sylvan sunken lanes... almost up to KT's standards....

Image

Underground river resurgences.... Austwick Beck Head...

Image

Classic tea room in an old lady's parlour....

Image

For every resurgence there's an engulfment somewhere...

Image

All that fresh air and, er, fresh rain warrants a superb felafel burger with loads of pickled cucumbers, salsa, etc etc. And a pint of Midnight Bell ruby ale....

Image

Jaysus it was wet though. The River Ribble had turned into a raging torrent overnight....

Image

Oh and I've decided to include a shot of a 22g in action every time now just for the hell of it... marvellous...

Thanks again Bob for a top excursion :-bd

Good work chaps. I rode those clapper bridges last weekend - at 6 am! Those lanes are my favourite bit of the YD300.

It rained really heavily overnight. I went out for a couple of hours at dinnertime today and just had a few spots of rain. Cath was riding over at Settle and it chucked it down - due to the overnight rain some of the becks were torrents, talking normally fitting in a 6" pipe under the track now being thigh deep!

Oh and the Marmot Essence jacket, Berghaus Paclite pants, Dissent 123 gloves, waterproof socks, and sandals, stood up to the biblical deluge faultlessly. I wore one bamboo base, a 310g fleece, bamboo socks, and Madison Tempest shorts under that lot, and honestly they were only very mildly damp after 3 days. The sandals were ace, dried fast, great for 'camp' operations, and very fast to put on and take off.

The second night I was very close to bivvying in Bob's lime kiln but switched to the shippon at the last moment.... lime kiln... hmm... indoors or outdoors... you decide

Resurgences properly excite me. There’s one near my house on private land and I’m desperate to go ferreting about in my wooly suit and wellies

Top effort, especially with all that rain and sharing a bunk with dead sheep :o
