Do I need a new faster 29er type carbon hardtail for such a race?
(Bearing in mind there is only one correct answer to this and I need to be able to "prove" I need one to the boss).
Can you make sure it's dry and sunny please?

Surely a carbon cross bike would be better for such a thing?slarge wrote:Do I need a new faster 29er type carbon hardtail for such a race?

Yes but I WANT a hardtail, I just need the justification. a race such as this could help with the justification....Ben98 wrote:slarge wrote:

Normally I recoil at the sound of the word 'race' but I find myself keep thinking about this. It's clearly way beyond me right now but maybe that's why :?
The 'gravel mutts' on the original link look ace, I don't have a cross bike right now but I could be swayed to bodge something together mutt style
Scotland would be better though as Wales is bloody miles away!

Re: If there were a UK 'gravel race' ...
I was wrong. It's not 8,000m at all...jameso wrote:so we do.. (mild panic sets in, thinks about tyres and gearing)Ian wrote:+ I reckon 200 miles of Welsh gravel would have something like 8000m of climbing...
...current route draft indicates 9,200m (30,000 ft)

If anyone wants me, I'll be fitting gears to the Kite...

Re: If there were a UK 'gravel race' ...
Haven't a clue. I was going to try it on a pair of 35c Cindercross. I'll report back. I can't get anything wider in the rear of the Kite anyway, so I don't really have a lot of choice.

So are you reckoning on mtb like tread for this then?Ian wrote:Haven't a clue. I was going to try it on a pair of 35c Cindercross. I'll report back. I can't get anything wider in the rear of the Kite anyway, so I don't really have a lot of choice.
