Inner tubes... near the valve

Post by ericrobo »

Got back from a very wet, windy and cold ride on Monday afternoon - so windy I retreated from the climb up Winter Hill, and my hands (thumbs) were too cold to change gear (the cable does need cleaning and lubing). I didn't realise my tools and spare tubes were not with me, but in another bag I use when I'm carrying my stove etc. in a frame bag...
Got home and warmed up, then saw that my front tyre was flat... investigating today I find it is yet another 'puncture' where the seat of the valve has come away, so it has to go in the bin. And it is fairly new, no actual punctures in the tune. Tube is a Bontrager.

Lucky it only went when I had got back home !

Has anyone else had this sort of problem with their tubes ?

Not the same problem but I did buy some On-One tubes and only one out of three would hold air :?

I used to get a very similar problem with the valve separating. The rim-strip I was using was ghetto - just old inner tube stretched around the rim and a hole punched in it. Once I put proper tape on the rim, the problem stopped.

I had this problem with two tubes in a row where the valve base came away from the tube - about 50% of the weld / join!

Both were continental - can not remember the model but it does 26x 2.2 with Schraeder.
