like it or not, this will now grow, with hotspots like the lakes being hit next.
people post on facebook and instagram where they are camping, and people will follow.

what we do is now becoming mainstream and very fashionable, and people want to be seen as being so.
the growth in the whole adventure 'lifestyle' sells bigstyle and will continue doing so.

a lot of companies and websites have added to the growth. we may be the ones who do it right in our 'leave no trace' ethos, but in a country where the majority are lazy fuckits, the damage and rubbish will alway be left by them.

it will just get worse sadly.

You only have to look at the number of wild camping videos on youtube to see that stealth aspect is being flaunted. That fellow from Durham who was posted on here for discovering bikepacking is one of many posting videos promoting it openly to a wider audience. At least on here it is kept within the club by and large and isn't glorified. Also folks here recognise that leave no trace includes not signposting locations.

I was on Dartmoor walking at the weekend.

Anything 500m from a car park is a disaster area of litter, idiots, dog sub standard, moaning kids, and overloud bluetooth speakers.

The roads are rammed with dickheads as well. Normally Spain provides a wonderful creche service for us and handles these tw6ts for cash. Any guesses as to what is going on?

Bellever is a magnet for this unfortunately. I know the problem is not unique to Dartmoor, but the f*cking mess left behind by such a*seholes beggars belief.

I've been "wild camping" or whatever they call it since about
The age of 16 ( so 37ish years) always with a leave no trace ethos,
In conjunction with various activities ( LandRover/Trf Greenlaneing,
Cycling, walking etc) last weekend when I drove down past Nantymoch
There were 6 camper vans parked up ( all separately), all left no mess
Or were doing no wrong that I could see, I spent a couple of nights in the
Forest and seen only a handful off trail bike riders ( not on legal tracks)
In 2 1/2 days, oh...and a couple in a tent near the old mines, again,
Being respectful. It doesn't help that websites like trip advisor have got
The area listed as an amazing place to go wild camping

Over the years in that area, I have helped and spoke to local farmers,
Chatted with the Police and Forestry, helped a mountain biker with smashed
In shoulder, contributed to the local economy but only ever left footprints and
Taken photos and memories. Hopefully they'll all truck off back to Spain after covid.
Rant over....sorry.

This is definitely not a challenge to the sort of lightweight camping we enjoy when walking or biking. Its trying to deal with the car based camping and out of control scenes already described here.

Fly camping sums it up perfectly.

But to answer the original question - yes i reckon its a sign of things to come and something were to consider when planning a route out

At least the Spanish corral the w@nkers into specific resorts where they can be relieved of as much revenue as possible without damaging the rest of the country. There's one such "sink" resort about an hour from us, a girl from our village who Trish had taught English had enlisted in the Catalan police force, the Mossos d'Esquadra, and was sent to Salou for a week a couple of years ago. She returned wide eyed at the sights, it was certainly a baptism of fire for a country girl. Her comment to us was, why do they drink so much? This from a 20 year old who we often see socialising was quite telling.
Some of the sights I see when collecting visitors and family from the airport are truly shocking. The UK's relationship with alcohol really needs sorting out.
Thankfully none of these idiots have the imagination to venture out of the resort or even the hotel so don't interfere with anything we do.

I reckon next Spring will be a shocker, weather wise, so they'll be all back to the costa del ripoff and any laws passed due to the current situation will get quietly forgotten (or at least not enforced for the likes of us). Dave also makes a good point - 500m away from the car park. Try a few miles and you'll have the place to yourself.

I've been up north to visit a relative but managed to sneak out to the Peaks and ran the Edale Skyline route. For the first 17 miles I passed maybe 10 people. From the Mam Tor car park up to the summit and across to the next I must have easily passed 100+ in a mile or so. As has been noted, away from the car parks the countryside still seems as empty as normal.

The fly campers won't be more than half a mile from where they can park as they've too much stuff to carry.

Visited daughter in Sheffield couple weeks ago and rode to Hathersage and back (in a 'quick sneak out'

). The road from Burbage Rocks all the way to Dennis Knoll was total mayhem - cars up on verges (parked next to the 'please don't park on verges' signs

), loads of queues trapped behind 'parked' vehicles, etc. Insane. Seemed mostly climbers actually, not many walkers.

Have occasionally thought Dennis would be quite a nice bivvy spot but it's just Too Naughty and infringes Rule#1.

I did 21 in total but it wasn't a stealth boast

I had to go for a run as we didn't have room in the car for a bike. I went Tuesday so it was more like 15 degrees and it rained on and off the whole way round.

I did notice the car parks were busy on the drive back to Sheffield.

. Sounds like you got off lightly with weather, Tues I was meant to be in Llanberis with its heavy rain and 60mph+ winds.

Peaks are an interesting place to bivvy. Very sensitive of course so I really do try not to be cheeky there. Curiously, offhand, at least four permissions that I've sought have been granted by landlords/ladies. Amazing how many fields, graveyards, playgrounds, copses etc seem to be owned by publicans!

Isn't the peaks one of the most heavily used national parks in the UK / world (when measured in numbers per acre or similar)? Its always been a busy place and was when l was at college in Sheffield 30 years ago. Cant imagine it's got any "better".

Yes the Peak is very popular but it's very concentrated in a few places: Hathersage, Matlock and the like. Same in the Lakes, Bowness/Windermere, Ambleside and Keswick will be packed, Langdale and similar will be busy but everywhere else will be pretty quiet. Even on a fine BH weekend it's possible to spend an entire day in the Lakes and only see a handful of people once you are away from the roads.

That is also my experience of the Lakes -Pick somewhere with easy car acess and it will be busy get out into the hills and you see next to no one- i also find the more remote you are the less walkers care about you .
