Ah. I can't plan routes on Strava either. I just have a VV window open and use Basecamp, both showing OS 1:50K.

Join Veloviewer and just import the KML directly into Basecamp. Works a treat.

Time rich and cash poor Steve, it's the only way. Blooming hard as I don't drive, like the from home challenge, and don't count walking personally. Not sure if there will be much advancement in square now we can get out there and do my first love, big trips to new places. My own personal target is most squares visited ever

Looks like the number one slot in the BearBones all-time square tickers list is now firmly out of my grasp though, as Jack Peterson has come storming through in the last few weeks, and is rapidly heading towards the top of the UK chart

Big jump PJ was at last getting a tricky one on a farm in the Fens by bribing a kid on a bike with haribo to show me round his dad's land.
The amount of times to get to the 100 SQ level is nuts, just look at those guys cluster numbers, I have squillions of tiles but I'm more of a far from home explorer

Not sure if it’s available for the etrex, it’s on garmin ConnectIQ, oh and it’s called Every tile. There’s a good app for Android phones apparently.

It is only compatible with the Edge series, unfortunately.

The app for Android phones, is probably the one I already have - Explorer helper for veloviewer. Useful, but only when you get your phone out to check things

Yeah, I started plotting the outline of the square I'd need to compete at that level, and it's a mind blowing commitment.

Not sure if there will be much advancement in square now we can get out there and do my first love, big trips to new places.

Bit of a funny one today and potentially a bit of stupidity on my part... The little one wanted to go out for a ride, a proper ride out in the 'scenery'. So naturally I gathered them up after protesting with him that his CNOC ain't suitable for Wessenden Head. I lost.

Got there and started walking (him riding but carefully) down from the top reservoir near West Nab - which is supposed to be the highest point in West Yorkshire so the nice lady from the National Parks told me when getting out her 4x4, but its not owned by the National Park - and after getting down to the where the second res was in view (Wessenden Res as opposed to the smaller Wessenden Head) I'd pulled out my VV app and knew there was a square just a few strong golf ball wacks away. Only problem being I'd never ventured up there as I've always been scared going there with my back, ever seen I went up from the other end with Jonny and Tez from them ends...

Naturally, I was on foot and wasn't gonna let a 6 year old and his CNOC bike get in the way. So we started walking/riding up of which Andy Bennet would be proud of him.





Then got to the point where I had wondered whether I could scramble up with my phone and collect that there square. But no joy as this little waterfall was in the way.


So we had our sarnies (well ok, crisps) with them none the wiser why I'd brought em up here for the views. Little one enjoying it as he's apparently not scared of heights but daughter feeling slightly queasy (like me) at points.

Got home and upon a bit more exploring it turns out it could be another problematic one to get to. More so if you're scared of hieghts (and dont like walking). I could go the other way up Wessenden Head Road and left down some sort of path. The bullsEye marks it out below and its the square with Horsley Head Moss.


But it appears half of it is covered with people with guns (coming via the northerly quarter is probably even more silly as thats the place where the shooting club HQ appears to be) and the black dots seems to be some sort of path (maybe) but how sketchy!!





Looks to me like a full square needs traversing (is that the word!), from the bottom right of the map where Wessy Head Rd can be seen in yellow. Even then it's a definite no-go on bike I assume which would mean heading up in car just for a square and going against my carbon-friendly policy (I have a 3L and a friend who educates me on the hazards of fuel fumes and the harms its causing to the youngsters... he's part of the Born In Bradford long term study)....

Hmmm... decisions... decisions!!

If you look carefully inside the square I'm concerned with its got a marking of BSs... Does that mean someone from OS had the same problem as us and wrote this (BS) with an extra 's' to reflect it

Those black circular dots are not a path, it's a parish boundary, there will be nothing to follow on the ground.

I would walk up the LandRover track west of the range (take notice of any shooting notices) and run the 100 metres to the tile and back to the footpath, you shouldn't need to enter the danger area. It is a longer walk (or even cycle?) but the ground is not as steep and will not be vegetated.

Went out on my first tile grabbing mission, thank you all for planting the bug. Ventured to lots of small patches of forest I have never visited. It would have helped when going to new places to ride if I remembered to change the batteries in my GPS beforehand.

Thankfully I had a rough idea where I was and came back by small country roads (and 16% grades on loose forestry roads)

Nope... I'm gonna get the 6 year old broken in. Show him there's this square in the cohntryside we need to go fetch. But we may get shot doing so. Would he like to join me

Just checked my VV today and seems after yesterdays ride before the night shift, I obviously hit the right spots. After what must be half a year or maybe more I've finally increased my square to 16 from 15...

Walk this morning with the kids (even did a bit of market research whilst out asking em who'd like to join me for a bivvy up here... eldest= thats disgusting... eldest girl 9 = not interested as it's not a nice thing to do... 6 year old= definitely up for it, when we coming) via Wessenden Hwad Road up to the Cairn at Nab Point then beyond to go fetch the square. Suprisingly easy and since the red flags weren't up for shooting we even had chance to mark our territpry there (me and the 6 year old... we were bursting and did wash us hands!)...

So stray square bagged this am. Then this eve I managwd to get out towards Sowerby Bridge on the bike and nabbed another stray square in a sea of blue squares. VV total square gone up to 17 from 15 two days ago... Result, I think yes

Regards West Nab... In case anyones wondering, it probably is rideable down but uphill would be quite a bit of HAB...

Darn it - got distracted by the farmer's market, in Lodsworth, and forgot to wiggle round the back streets. Those 2 tiles are going to be a pain to go back for.

Yep Eaton Hall is definitely an elusive tile - only way to bag it will be an open day.

Hoping August open day will be on, otherwise it’ll be a long wait to next year!

Believe me I’ve been staring at this tile for a week or so, and had a look at pretty much every conceivable entrance - all locked gates and a fair schlep to anywhere near the hall.

So I was hurtling along in the gloaming tonight on some beautiful quiet roads and a car came right up alongside me flashing it's lights, then shouted at me to stop. The car was a mobile security unit and apparently I was in the middle of a private estate.

I was summarily escorted back from whence I came.

Had a flashback to this thread and wondered if it was the same place you'd been talking about. Turns out it was.

Got the square.

FInally squeezed up to a 16x16. lots of the really tricky local ones are 'got'

Theres still some other tricky ones but after being stuck on 13x13 for ages its not going to take all that much to press up to a 20x20 given the spread I already have

Finally got round to getting a lonely square which took me up to 11*11 from 10*10. A couple of slightly circuitous commutes home next term should get me to 15*15, as I've currently got small patches of missed squares.

After that, it'll start needing a tad more thought!
