There's the planets trail or solar way that comes into York from the south. Used to do it every year with the kids. Pancake flat and arrow straight so not particularly interesting riding. I wasn't commuting but I imagine it might be a bit of a clash if you're looking to knock on at a pace amongst all the kids and meanderers.
EDIT - sorry, got geographically embarassed and distracted by Chew's mention of York, can't imagine this is vaguely relevant

Spoiler - I didn't know about the sculpture on the bridge so the first ride I did meant that was special when it came into view.

I went on the path once... does look proper gravelly and I doubt any council plans to refurb it any time soon
