Hope Hoops for me. I've broken one but that was my fault not the wheel's. I wouldn't use a tyre bigger than 2.35" on them as they are only 19mm internal width.

I'm not sure I will ever go with anything other than DT Swiss hubs these days. The ones I have had have been flawless for me. I have a couple of sets laced to light bicycle carbon rims, both MTB and road deep section and I really like them.

Dt 350 hubs, dt butted spokes (or sapim d-lights if you're not too hefty), dt or stans rims, brass nips.
I also have a rear wheel in use with one of the funnworks xl25 rims, its absolutely fine.

Lots of custom options, sometimes cheaper than parts...

Found some XT wheels very cheap

Centre lock brakes though, I seemed to be very anti centrelock in my own head for no reason

Is there an actual problem with centrelock or should I just buy them??

What do you think is wrong with Centrelock? As someone who has worked as a bike mechanic I've never had a problem with them. I've seen loads of sheered/rounded rotor bolts though.

My wheels are about 50:50 but I'm favouring XT hubs these days.

The same as you, I've always been anti-centre lock but have no explanation why. I think it might be that I wouldn't carry the tool to take one off when on a ride, but I've never had to take a disc off when on the trail. I guess you might need to remove a disc to replace a broken spoke..... but I've never broken a spoke and I don't carry spares anyway.

You can get adapters to run 6 bolt if your preferred choice of disc isn't available as a centre lock version.

Hope Hoops for me. They used to use Stan's rims but they've now started doing their own and these are available in a variety of widths etc. I haven't used anything else (one set of Superstar wheels years ago) so its not a big sample size.

IIRC Shimano hubs used to be a bit weighty, wouldn't know if that is still the case. Also, are they still cup&cone? Personally I find that an unnecessary PITA compared to the simplicity of cartridge bearings, particularly if you're an "average" mechanic

Of course with Hope hubs you have the joy of their alloy freehub which tends to get chewed up and makes cassette "removal" interesting sometimes You can get a steel freehub if you specify it but of course that increases weight. Not an issue if you're running something which doesn't use that type of fitting.

From an engineering perspective, CL makes a lot of sense. I think the problem is that it's simply not what we're used to, hence the usual reservations. If it bothers you, buy some CL - 6 bolt adaptors.

I've a couple of wheels fitted with CL rotors and have had no problem with them. Then again I've had no problem with 6 bolt rotors either.

The tool is just the normal Shimano cassette tool so most will already have it but of course it's a bit heavier and bulkier than a T25 driver if you are thinking of carrying one on the road but the NBT or Unior cassette tool might work as well.

One advantage if you are touring is that if you bent a rotor then you aren't limited to the 6 bolt design if the shop only has a CL rotor. (Unlikely)

Both my Bonty Mustangs and more recently DT Swiss Splines are centerlock. Even a three-thumbed monkey like me can't get 'em wrong. No problems in 6 years with 'em.
