Head Tourches

Looking for a dual purpose head tourch.

Something light and a small packsize, but with a good enough beam to allow me to ride to the next town for an hour after dark.

Any recomendations?

Have a look at the alpkit heap torches, I have a version of the gamma and now the manta.

I usually just carry a petzl elite, but you couldn't really cover any sort of terrain with it.

I like both the gamma and manta for when I need to "see" well. The manta being a little brother with focus able beam as well as diff colours but the gamma has a red flashing led on the rear battery pack which has proved very useful for night running etc.

And they won't break the bank!

Very happy with my Gamma and I understand the new one is a brighter LED? Plenty of Chinese lanterns on eBay but I'd be loath to suggest one from the millions available.

I've got a LED Lenser H7R which charges via USB and gives a much better beam (and spread) than the Petzl (Tikka II) I have.

It's 120g and on full will get 2 hours before dying.

It lives on me helmet all year long.

I have a Fenix L2D which I have had a few years now so likely to be superceded or updated. It is good with a fisheye or fishhook(?) mount for attaching to bars or helmet. Couple of TD racers used them in last years.

They run on AA batteries, same as your gps which is an advantage. 105gm with 2 duracell batteries.

I've one of these too, very bright and cheap. Seems well made and easily mounted with a little thought (bodging). Runs on a single AA.

Alpkit gamma - have ridden back on it once (forestry tracks, not single track) when an old Lumicycle battery gave up the ghost. Added flashy red light on the back is handy too.

Petzl Zipka is very good but expensive.

The Gamma is good but a bit bulky with the three straps and separate battery pack at the rear.

Used the littler of the Alpkit ones for first time last night. Worked just fine but it was only round camp and for an hour or two. Is it just me or is the "styling" a bit 70s? :?

Always liked the look of Zebra lights but seem a bit expensive. Which one you got and is it worth it?
