Just a quick report guys as I wasn't strictly bike-packing but I did wild camp and go off-road so it sort of counts!!
The general plan was to start at Milngavie and join the WHW and pick up the NCN Route 7 and head north and see where I visited until I got back. The route went through Aberfoyle-Callander-Killin-Pitlochry-Loch Tummel-Aviemore-off-road around Glenmore-Inverness-Glen Affric-Great Glen Way-Corran ferry out to Kentra Bay and back-Glencoe-WHW-Loch Lomond-Back to car.
9 days riding,566miles, a worn out chain and a lesson learnt....pack lighter next time!
Best thing I took were knee warmers and I didn't need the midge stuff I took as there wasn't any. I also ate far too many biscuits and came back the same weight. Damn!
The BOB is no problem off-road as long as the trail is wide enough and you keep the speed down if it gets a bit rocky, it will bounce around if you're too fast.
Hi HUX, has the BOB rear wheel got suspension? What sort of weight were you carrying?
I'm thinking of one for a trip with the kids in France this year (just a few nights but some extra creature comforts would help in not putting them off for life and their too small to carry all their own stuff ). Handy for lugging all the crap down too the beach too. Cheers.
Hey 99percentchimp, the BOB I have is the YAK and doesn't have suspension, they do 1 called the IBEX with suspension but from what I've read its a waste of money as you don't need it. The YAK will do everything you need. I was towing about 20kg I reckon including the trailer but they will take up to 35kg. With a few bungees over the bag they are useful for carrying all sorts of crap including, cans of cider, bottle of wine, fishing rod, wet pants, rubbish bag, ginger nuts and a deer antler! They are also good as a mobile washing line and your stuff dries quicker the faster you go!
Nice one HUX, thanks for the reply. I'll discount the suspended one and think about the 'hard tail' version. Looks like we'll get plenty on there too (I'm thinking Breton cidre, picnics, beach/kids stuff and trips to the supermache as well, once we are away over the summer).
I'm also thinking of taking the 4 of us along the Nantes - Brest Canal for a few days (sort of lightweight for 4 of us) camping and stuffing our faces in various Breton eateries..... this looks the ideal solution.
Had an offer of a lend too (Ta Yetiman; nice one) and have spotted one on Fleabay too (I'm after a big wheeled version I've since discovered).
