Don Whillans just came to mind as the most straight talking adventure guy I could think of. No doubt mountains are more emotionally draining than bike rides, just couldn't think of cycling's Whillans equivalent. Apart from Stu, that is :)

Don Whillans just came to mind as the most straight talking adventure guy I could think of. No doubt mountains are more emotionally draining than bike rides, just couldn't think of cycling's Whillans equivalent. Apart from Stu, that is :)

Interesting doing a replay of the TD - Sofiane leaves everybody for dead in his 70 hour sleepless stint but he's slowly been reeled in it would appear... My money is on Mike tho'

SS currently doing 14-17mph along the Togwotee pass section. Guess there's not a lot of snow along there, though it's not a climb I'm pretty sure he's off road and close to the high point.

Not big on vegetarian options are they? When we were in the States recently this was a constant issue for me. I was told on many occasions (when cold, wet, tired and very, very hungry) that the vegetarian option was a side salad or fries. I was thinking that if I was twenty times fitter and in possession of a steely will of iron that might get me through an event like this (nope and nope), being veggie would prevent me being able to compete effectively. You just need to be able to grab food quickly and move on and having to f*nny around finding something to suit your chosen dietary preference.

I think there are pretty good vegan and veggie options in big centres of population, maybe less so out in the sticks. I'm not a veggie (obviously given my penchant for chlorinated chicken sandwiches) but when I've been over there I've begun to crave meat free options after a couple of weeks. My wife's a yank and is a confirmed carnivore, she thinks I'm a weirdo.

This vegan dreams of the choices a veggie gets --if i am really lucky i can get biscuits from a shop/garage..

This might be easier as you could just do lots of drops/collection of supplies which i seem to recall are ok within the rules - tbh its what i would have to do .

Joking aside its a ******* sub standard thing to do as that bear will highly likely look for human food now its had some. Two or three incidents like that and yogi will either be moved (which often doesnt end well) or shot. Plus it brings the race down. A few more incidents like that, and the park authorities might act to restrict the race.

Nope, that was the section before the pass - others going through the actual Togwotee section near Brooks Lake are at 3mph or so.

Josh I has posted up on instagram that he's easing off a bit and enjoying the ride rather than missing out on all the views. Fair play to him.

The place where that incident happened is not on the race route, and is just to the west of Banff, off the highway. No suggestion this incident is in any way connected to the race.

Edit - just read the article properly. It actually says "The camper, who was in Banff for the 2019 Tour Divide". Damn. Pity he had to tell that to the authorities!

Dave had a shorter day yesterday and is giving his legs a bit of a break ... here they are having a break on Wilma Flintstone's bed.

Surprisingly easy to get caught out by local bye-laws. Years ago we went to Banff skiing. The ski-pass is actually something like any 8 days out of 10 so you can do something else in the two days if the weather's bad, etc.

So we hired a car and went for a drive round the area. Got back to the car to find a ticket on it. Turns out that you need a vehicle pass in the park but there's an exemption for the Trans-Canada Highway that goes right through the middle of the park. We'd transferred by bus from Calgary and the car hire company didn't mention it when we picked up the car. Ignorance is no defence and all that. Being Canadians the Park Authority were all chilled about it when I went to pay the fine, about 20 dollars from memory.

Even so, leaving food in bags on the ground in bear country is asking for trouble.
