Re: Highland Trail 2019
Fair enough - he's been in the zone so long, truly epic of anyone on this race, be it at the front or otherwise. Amazing, he should be proud as so should the others.
Re: Highland Trail 2019
so - dusty is at Loch na Sealga. dude seems highly resilient from following his other race and personal adventures via ig and revelate. will be interesting to see if the crossing causes some mischief....

Looks like he might be waiting for Ben and Thomas to turn up. Safety in numbers and all that...

Re: Highland Trail 2019
Looks like he crossed no bother - 20mins from the start of the crossing to near Larachantivore
Karls back at the OBH, 25 hours after he was there last. That f***in good going by the way as it took me, bob, Ian PV, Pete McNeil and Craig Mac around 24 hours in near perfect conditions in 2017.

Re: Highland Trail 2019
Strong work by Dustin. I'd never laid eyes on it before back in 2013 and couldn't see the bottom. I proceeded to remove all the bags from my bike (less weight) and wade across with a couple of bags to see how deep it was (it wasn't flowing fast on the surface). Didnt even wet a plum

Bet it was different today

Edit: Also, yes indeed nice work Karl - Going strong this year

Re: Highland Trail 2019
Apparently James Hayden has had tyre issues, and his pump is broken, so he's waiting for the shops to open in Ullapool.

Re: Highland Trail 2019
A few folk seemed to be running narrow, thin tyres. Lee Craigie was on thunderburts, sounds like Jenny G was having tyre issues earlier as well (Maxxis icons I think). Given that a lot of the route is rock covered in rocks and a lot is bog central, you need a burly tyre and any time saving that a narrower tyre may offer is more than outweighed by the potential for it stopping you dead...
Re: Highland Trail 2019
back in 2013 on the ht 4 xx - I rode specialized fast track sworks 2.0 rear (with a big heavy rohloff) and an fast track 2.2 front.
only had one puncture, 1 km from the finish and just rode out. (a rear)
Summary, light fast tyres can work. But I had to run higher pressures and my arse suffered. (I bought a sata cruz superlight within a week of finishing)
I'd go with reinforced tyres now, but i'm also heavier now.

Re: Highland Trail 2019
I can't remember 100% but I don't think there is a bike shop there, but there is hardware stores he could get gorilla tape, glue or something from surely.
Edit 7.09am - looks like he's doing just that with the tape. Ordering pads and a pump online and just waiting now.

Re: Highland Trail 2019
Last update from James is that he's seeing what he can get in Ullapool else a bus too and from Inverness will be quicker than an online order.
Re: Highland Trail 2019
He'll get DQ'd for doing that. Rob Waller did the same thing in 2015 (train from Achnashellach to Inverness and back to buy brake pads) and got a DQ for it.cyclingtiger wrote: ↑Tue May 28, 2019 8:02 am Last update from James is that he's seeing what he can get in Ullapool else a bus too and from Inverness will be quicker than an online order.
Maybe see if any bike shops in Inverness would deliver to him?

Yeah, I was just about to say that. It's in the rules.
Re: Highland Trail 2019
I got a free hub delivered 24hours overnight guaranteed from Kent to Ullapool in 2015. It was ordered 10.15 on mon and arrived 9.30 tues. it is possible

Re: Highland Trail 2019
I know someone who will be driving from Inverness to Ullapool this afternoon but I guess having it specially delivered also breaks the rules?

Any news of Mike Sheldrake? His tracker hasn't moved but no news of him scratching?
Re: Highland Trail 2019
Probably scratched but not told Greg?Bontyrider wrote: ↑Tue May 28, 2019 9:26 am Any news of Mike Sheldrake? His tracker hasn't moved but no news of him scratching?
You only appear on the scratch list and have the dot removed from the map once you've told Greg you're scratching.

Re: Highland Trail 2019
Looks like Dusty pulled an overnighter - just learned he's Eric Parson's (Revelate) sidekick. And, he's on a fat bike!
my record is smashed! Will be the tool for the job for the conditions
Two others have got over the sealga. Weather up there today looking good - plenty of sun this morning with some showers this afternoon. Good tomorrow too but a bit more showery Thursday. So the water levels will all be dropping and folks can dry off a bit
