OS maps on touch?

Post by Bearbonesnorm »

So I've been given a 5G ipod touch and would like to add OS maps to it. I'm not too fussed about gps functions, etc. I'd just like the maps to stop me carting numerous paper ones about. I've had a look on itunes and I'm wondering if anyone's tried OutDoors Great Britain ?

Looks like it ticks all the boxes ?

I use Memory Map on my iPhone and iPad but I have no idea how they compare with others. It seems to work though.
I used to have to pay £13 for a chunk of OS 1:50000 (a chunk was enormous) but on the iPad it has changed and seems to be a one off payment of £25 for anywhere.
If anybody can tell that I've misunderstood this I'd be happy to be told!

UK Map uses the OS map elements that the OS give out for free and overlays the bits they leave out using OSM data. It's £7.99 iirc and you can down load as much/little of the UK OS map at 1:50/1:25/1:10k as you like over wifi and have it stored locally. Won't this just be doing the same as your Garmin, or are going to compare?

*edit* It also lets you look at the Maps in 3D

Yes it is really. The Retina screen on the touch is lovely though ... be a shame not to have maps on it ;)

True, the Dakota is a bit fuzzy when you're used to a retina screen.

If you wanted to see some screen shots of your local area send me/post up some grid refs and I can mail you the screen shots of how UK Map presents them at the various scales.

As you're a Mac user, worth having a look at Routebuddy. It's not free, but means you can have OS mapping on all your OSX/iOS devices.

Yep, I have GB outdoors on my iPhone, and it functions nicely. Prices seem to compare fairly well with the OS app as well.

The 1:250 000 OS road map is free. Useful to have as a back up for checking "does that road lead where I think it might?" on road bike explorations in areas without decent mobile reception.
