Hammock insulation

Hey guys. I'm new to the forum and this my first post. I've recently moved away from ground sleeping and started experimenting with hammocks (quick pitch, no need to worry about rough/ wet/ steep ground, uninterrupted views, novelty value etc).

My question is this. How do all you other hangers prevent cold arse syndrome? Is an insulation mat enough to keep the worst of the cold at bay or do you use underquilts? Any info on how much of the year you use an underquilt for or what temps you get down to just using a mat would be really helpful.

Pads in hammocks definitely work for warmth but I always found I was wrestling with them to stay on top.
I then moved to a sheet of evazote which was bigger and kept me warm but I found I had a problem with condensation.
When I bought my first uq, it was a revelation for me and I've not used a pad since.
So much more comfort and warmth.
I use uq's all year now as they're easily ventable when warm out but plenty warmth when needed.

I have a synthetic one on classifieds at the moment if your interested.

Thanks for the reply. I've been wondering whether quilts are worth it. Do you combine yours with a sleeping bag?

I use a light weight TQ in the summer and a PD400 unzipped in the winter.

Just ignore me... I'm a noobie to bikepacking (and this great forum) but have done a few hangs. I'm getting the impression that I'm going through a classic learning curve where you upgrade bit-by-bit and end up with a UQ. I'm at a 'mid-way point' using 2-layer hammocks with an airmat / closed cell mat / car sunshield (depending on temp) between the layers (to stop slippage) and a standard sleeping bag. No cold butt at -5 with airmat + sunshield.

So imho if you've got the readies then save yourself the faffing and go for the UQ right away - I can just see myself doing the same eventually!

Out of interest (look out bank manager), how heavy is your uq?

Ask the birthday boy, he has it at his house.
I seem to recall it's about a kilo of warmth.
