Re: Tomb Raider..... What's your best guess
My guess is Bedd being the Welsh for grave or tomb, the one I know around Mach is Bedd Taliesin which, legend has it, is the burial place of the poet Taliesin SN671912. He lived in the 12th century and his best known work is Oggi Oggi Oggi, Oi, Oi Oi

Re: Tomb Raider..... What's your best guess
A good contender PB. Loads of cracking routes to get there as well, and spots.
There's another well-known one at Dyffryn Ardudwy but that might be pushing it for an overnighter. I found a very interesting report about these type of sites around Stu's area - there's loads of them, but mainly round barrows. Depends on the exact interpretation of "tomb" really. Interestingly a lot are on top of hills without a pub or caff for miles around, so I reckon it all depends on whether Stu's cruelly steering us away from those, or not, as to which grave he sends us to.
Personally I'm hoping it'll be something like Raiders Of The Lost Ark with lots of cunning booby-traps to catch out inattentive bikepackers so that only the most courageous (and loony) have any hope of obtaining the prize within the inner sanctum.
4 days to go anyroad, and I'm going to preserve the suspense by not looking at this thread again

Pretty sure that he will have pulled a blinder this year and is having Alicia Vikander available to massage our weary legs. I can tell you one thing - im not going to miss that checkpoint.

Or possibly a repeat of last year where the problem was where to stash unnecessary insulation

I reckon it will be somewhere in Mid-Wales with one GR in the Irish Sea for the pack rafters

As the title suggests I'm assuming a route taking in some burial chambers.....JohnClimber wrote: ...What do you think he'll have us looking for and where do you think he will be sending us in mid January?

Oooooohh!!!
Just plotted the points and it's all fairly compact. Now need to look closer and see what route to plan.

Re: Tomb Raider..... What's your best guess
So, was my guess of Bedd Taliesin correct? Idea for next one. Dazed and Confused IE spots that Led Zeppelin used to record, album covers, live, etc based around Mach, Artists Valley and Bron y Aur.

Re: Tomb Raider..... What's your best guess
Nah, but 'twas an excellent guess and nuffin stopping visiting it anyway
. Yeah, Led Zep 3 might have to be the soundtrack for the event. That's assuming one isn't going in the other direction of course, or even needs a soundtrack other than the one provided by Mother Nature. I'd posit that the area isn't the Stairway To Heaven but actually is heaven

Re: Tomb Raider..... What's your best guess
Indeed! Have had the honour of shaking JPJ's hand. Unfortunately the magic didn't rub off onto mine. Obscure historical stuff for pop pickers: I'm into early 60's instros - ceiling-high in LPs/singles here - particularly the legendary Jet Harris who was of course the original punk rocker 20 years early and the first electric bassist in the UK (some would argue Brian Gregg but...). Jet bought me a beer once in Aylesbury - luckily he was on the wagon by then otherwise I wouldn't be here to tell the tale. JPJ played for him for a short while in '62/'63. Nick Beggs, bassist with Kajagoogoo was my neighbour recently and knows JPJ. I once ran down our road in the middle of the night with Nick B, clad only in our underpants, chasing ne'er-do-wells. Top bloke. Sadly no photos. Mrs Perrin told me the other day that Shane Fenton's son lives a few doors down which I hadn't known. Right, that's enough name-dropping
. Wouldn't be surprised if The Legendary Stardust Cowboy isn't within shouting distance too - I'd like "Paralysed" played at my wake
.

Re: Tomb Raider..... What's your best guess
There's a nice track that runs from the Anglers Retreat forest down into Artists Valley, I got to the farm at the bottom on a ride about 25 years ago and had a long chat with a chap sat in the garden. Had no idea who it was, not being a Led Zeppelin fan but saw said chap on the telly a few weeks later, turns out it was Jimmy Page.

They (?) said on Radio 4 last week that the number one choice for songs at funerals in the UK was the Monty Pythons' "Always look on the bright side of life". A good choice, I thought.RIP wrote: I'd like "Paralysed" played at my wake.

Re: Tomb Raider..... What's your best guess
Route planning has now started in ernest. Apparently I am going to be riding a significant part of the TCW!
Re: Tomb Raider..... What's your best guess
Er, just started hurriedly throwing a bike back together. Probably have very little chance to route plan - hoping to gatecrash a social ride with anyone that will have me.
(Also hoping the weather nerds forum thing I'm following and their prediction for a second beast from the east don't materialise whilst I'm on the road - haven't bothered with winter tyres again (and it's more everyone else's chaos that causes me problems
)
