MYOG ... Pot Cosy.

It's not a secret that I like a cup of tea, so I end up carrying more fuel than a tanker. To help the situation I decided to knock up a pop cosy. The idea is that it will allow me to bring water to a boil, pop my pot in the cosy and any food will continue to cook without requiring a heat source, ie a stove. This should result in the ability to carry far less fuel.

The body is aluminium coated bubble wrap, the base and lid are high density foam with a covering of shiny bubble wrap and the whole thing has an external duct tape wrap ... all lovingly held together with evo stick



To test it, I boiled up 600ml of water and then stood the pot in the cosy, left it outside and wondered off to do something else. When I returned 40 minutes later the water was still hot enough to make a brew with ... result.



The weight of the thing is a massive 38g, obviously you could get that lower if you weren't so generous with the duct tape.

That Colin Ibbetson chap has made one out of an old karrimat that I quite liked the look of. Might have a go at one myself now you've given me the idea.

Nice one Stuart, I have been meaning to do similar for a while. Usually I brew about 650ml of water in the morning, using about 350ml for porridge then the remaining 300ml in the mug to brew a coffee. By the time I have waited for the porridge to hydrate and eaten it, my coffee has gone cold. I do enjoy the porridge, but boy is it better washed down with coffee. I cant be bothered with a reboil, usually by this point I've loaded up and I'm ready to hit the trails again!

Why such the big cutout for the handle? Just have two slits and the handles can position through these allowing a bit more insulation.

Glad to report the cosy worked a treat at weekend. I was able to boil enough water for two brews ... water for second one was left in pot and put in cosy. When it was time for Chew to use the one cup and have a brew it was still just as hot as when it first went into the cosy.

So go on ... break out the bubblewrap

B&Q sell 15 times as much for just over twice the cost of what Uncle Bob at backpacking light, then you can make pot cosys for all your friends and still have loads left over for all the rest of the pots your going to buy in your quest to source the lightest pot known to man.

After I've made my cup cosy there should still be enough left to make myself matching three piece suit cosy.

Just been to B&Q and they sell a smaller roll for about 7quid. Happy daze.

The basic B&Q stuff at £7 something isn't the stuff you want, the £11 roll has foil on both sides. As I sit here making pot cozies for a MSR Alpine cookset
