Ridgeway bivi spot
Does anyone have a suggestion for a bivi spot on or near the west end of the Ridgeway between Chiseldon and Avebury. Could also be around West Kennet, Overton Hill, Milk Hill,Tan Hill or West Woods.
Cheers

Perhaps a little too far East but the Woods near Wylands Smithy are pretty nice - just watch out for the Druids!
Re: Ridgeway bivi spot
try
- Luddington Hill Copse, just off route
- Barbury Hill would be a great view to wake up to - exposed
- Clumps of trees near the Hackpen White Horse
Im sure you will find something

We stopped at the Village Inn in Liddington, put a bit of money through the tills with rehydration and a feed, they kindly let us set up in the beer garden and then served us breakfast :)

I do not recommend Barbary Castle as you will be disturbed by late/early dog walkers. Same on Hackpen Hill. Liddington Hill is a good shout in the copse at the top.

The pub option does sound great. Fyfield Down above Avebury has some useful copses on it, or you could pretend to be one of the grey wethers depending on the colour of your bivi ;-)
On one ride we came across a bloke actually bivvying on the Ridgeway itself at the point where you can go right to Avebury, straight on to West Kenneth or left to Fyfield Down, and no one had bothered him!

Plus 1 for Fyfield down. Used to bivvy there 20 years ago on night rides out of Swindon.

Re: the pub bivy, obviously don't bank on it; we got lucky in that we'd spent enough, the temporary manageress was a massive flirt and more than a bit saucy with it and took a shine to one of the group (we never did find out if he slept indoors!), your mileage may vary, have a backup plan :D

Lidington castle has a moat. ....it's a very effective windbreak, allegedly.....
