New Garmin etrex 10 worth £90 of my money?

Post by Ray Young »

Like it says, is a new garmin etrex10 worth £90. I have never used or owned a GPS before. I don't want recommendations for more expensive units as I simply don't have the money. Look forward to your comments.

I'll say yes and no Ray. If you want to check a GR or record a ride and see where you've been once you return, then yes it is.

However if you'd like to navigate properly with it, then I'd say no. Although it's possible to navigate following an on-screen 'crumb trail' you won't actually know where you are unless you refer back to a map.

I know you don't want suggestions for other units but a S/H 20 would be much better and could possibly be had for less than £90.
May the bridges you burn light your way

The 10 is very basic. Did you want something for navigation or as more of a safety net?

If you have a smart phone, you could download the Viewranger app for free and have a play with that before parting with any cash. It's a very good app. The only downside is that it drains battery life!

I had a look at the etrex 10 and decided to buy the 20 - with a price match at Go Outdoors it cost £125 and IMHO is well worth the extra for the better screen and micro SD slot for adding maps

I got a used eTrex Legend HCx for less than that (think I paid £60 if I remember rightly) and it does 90% of the things that all of the really expensive models does and is (relatively) simple to use

Maybe have a peep on eBay and see what they're going for?

I use a Garmin edge 200 (presumably equiv to the basic etrex) for route recording and general nav following the bread crumb trail. If I need to see where I am I use UK Maps (£7.99 for all of the UK OS maps). If all else fails. Paper map.

I want to navigate properly so I think I'll look around a bit more. The price match deal on the 20 from go outdoors looks promising. Thanks for the info guys.

I have an etrex 30. I would say it or the 20 are worth it over the 10. I would also that given the option at the time of buying I would have got the 20. It was the same price though as mine was shop demo.

Its great for following routes, though the screen is small. I like the non touch screen generally too but its not as easy to name things and enter data as the touch screen ones are.
