I know I shouldn't be cynical about these things, but I'll just leave this here for further debate

This is true grass roots, unsupported bike packing. There are no marshals, no support truck, no organisation as such. There is just a start point, a route and a finish point. We will provide you with a GPX route or a map to copy, and that's it.

We have organised camping for the Saturday night

For those who don't want to sleep under canvas there are five rooms available around the courtyard.

To be fair, it's free and sounds like it could be fun. I'd like to explore the NYM more, so I'm not saying I won't do it.

Firstly fair play to them for getting off their arses and "making something happen". More than most people do in this life. And it's all about adding to choices, and why not eh.

But it all sounds a little bit familiar - "tea and cake", "grass roots", "unsupported", etc etc.

I've put my name down as interested, I'd have preferred a wild camp, but it looks like a good excuse to go back to the place I grew up and ride around a bit with some like minded people generally talking a lot of rot. And its something FREE in Yorkshire , what's not to like about that?

Seems a little harsh. It's the YD300 this year, and the two distances in the same time will appeal to very different riders. It's also in a different place (yeah, Yorkshire's massive). And it's free, so it's a bit difficult to see how anyone's being ripped off.

What Reg had done in the post which I quoted was to allude to the fact that by using phrases like "tea and cake" and "self-supported" this event was, shall we say, taking a lead from the Bear Bones events. Stu of course uses the same vernacular when promoting his events. Reg doesn't actually reference Bear Bones, but goes on to mention "the one and only and best" thereby giving that implication.

I then attempted to "miss the point" for comic effect - pretending I hadn't picked up on Reg's inference towards BB, and instead referenced the YD200 in mock agreement. Crucially the "humour", such that it is, only works if you don't take my post literally.

Admittedly the execution of the gag was poor but I'm not a comedian, just a boring civil engineer.

I quite like this format. I've considered something similar myself (well, in cohorts with another Aviemore resident). One camp spot for everyone, flexibility of route, no time pressure, socialising midway. And it's closer than Wales.

Really like the look of this and have ignored this area for far too long - couldn't care less if it is purist 'bikepacking' or not; people willing to organise things like this should be saluted. The cake, camping and accom options will also widen the appeal beyond those who only ride to suffer! Of course, if it ain't sunny like the photos on their site, count me out; Fair Weather Softy...

I put my name down for this at the weekend as it was filling up quick - places all gone now. Really looking forward to it. I probably sounded a bit snobbish about it before, but I was just amused at the way they'd talked up the "unsupported" side of things.

Fair enough Stu, I was only half serious, but didn't enter anyway (I think it is full now), as I couldn't guarantee being able to attend this far out. If I commit to an 'event' then I do make every effort to attend. To that end I think a fee is a good deterrent for those who might grab a slot without thinking it through, then no-show.

Hi Folks

Thought id better call in. I've kinda organised this sambles, if you can call putting a website together and calling in a lot of favours organising. But it is what it is. I think we'll get away with it and it might just work out!

Just a few words on some of the comments......

1 Sorry if its a bit similar to other events on here. I dont really do much internet, and had not heard of Bearbones or the 200 until i bumped into a couple of lads out in Tuscany. So appologies if I have ploughed a similar rut.... there was no intention of copying or treading on toes.

2 Yes it might not be for purists, but Ive met so many people who wanted a go at bike packing, but dont know where to start. i wanted to make it enjoyable for new and old hands alike. So there will be lots of lovely experts there to give the new guys a hand i guess. Having somewhere legal to put 100 plus people and have a bit of a knees up isn't true suffering I know, but hey, its free. Why not give it a go? By semi wild camping i mean we have the use of a farm, and if you want to kip in a ditch full of ants then be our guest. Or if you want to take the Missus or Husband along you can sleep somewhere nice and have a crap in a real toilet. Keeps them a bit happier.

3 People who organise these things should be sectioned, not saluted. Its been a pain in the arse. But if one person says they had a great time on sunday and buys me a pint then its worth it surely?

4. Its been bone dry for months so it will surely piss it down until you are all stuck in traffic on the A64 going home, at which point it will be 36 degrees again. Its Yorkshire.

5. Yorkshire is ace, but its the people that turn up that make things special, so if it is sub standard, it's your fault. Have to say the route is a belter though. I love those Moors and really want to share the good bits

6. Entry was capped at 100, but its become a nightmare anyway, so why bother. Lets just open the doors and let anyone in. Give me a shout and i'll add you to the list (more chance of getting that beer, see point3)

I hope those who do come have a great time. I was drunk when i said i would do it. I have lost sleep and money sorting this out and if i knew then what i know now I would run a mile. But hey, lets just crack on and see what happens.
