Android mapping app
Can anybody suggest a cheap or free android app that lets you load gpx files and follow them. I want to download maps to it as well so it can be used off line as a garmin backup for the bb200.
Many thanks

2nd that. Back country navigator is great for OS maps as well. Download the area you want before you set off then use the phone in aeroplane mode....sorted

Re: Android mapping app
Just as an alternative, I'd say Viewranger.

I have both apps. Backcountry much better for caching OS maps locally for free

I'll get both, I had a Spanish one, but it was too complicated.

I must admit that I only tend to use OpenStreetMap, so I wouldn't know.Dave Barter wrote:I have both apps. Backcountry much better for caching OS maps locally for free

The back country maps demonseems to work fine. I have downloaded maps and the gpx files. In the morning I'll try it outside and see if it can navigate ok. Once I figure that out !

Re: Android mapping app
On backcountry navigator I have figured everything out apart from how to follow a track. I can go to waypoints but there doesn't seem to be a follow track option anywhere I can see. If you can do this can anybody tell me how please.

Re: Android mapping app
You need to get the track on screen and then enable GPS and it will keep map centred on your location.
Edit the point in a circle icon does this, can't currently upload an image but it is below zoom controls on map on my phone

Re: Android mapping app
So the app doesn't do turn by turn navigation then?
Any other suggestions for one that does more Garmin style? If not this is better than nothing.

Re: Android mapping app
Osmand will (somehow) do turn by turn, and turn screen on for turns.
Re: Android mapping app
You can just use the OS maps app for that. As long as you have bought the maps in question and inputted the codes you will be able to see all the detail. You just download the gpx file into it and away you go. The route will then live in your My Routes bit for as long as you need it.
Re: Android mapping app
disappointed there's nothing for iOS

Re: Android mapping app
You're still using turn by turn on the Garmin? I'd have thought you'd have learned your lesson by now and just followed the line.

Re: Android mapping app
why do you need turn by turn you can look at the map and track on the screen and it shows your live locaton. you can see whats coming up on the map. i use it just like a normal map but with the bonus that it shows my location and i can upload a GPX .... though i do hve an old black and white Garmin on my handle bars with just a bred crumb trail for distince and speed etc. so mostly use back country for finer navigation or to see where i am

Maverick.
Fantastic, free, a range of Map's to use including OS 1:25k
I've been using it for years. Just scroll through the areas of interest in the scale you want and it caches it to your phone.

Yep the turn by turn isn't for riding this kind of thing with. If I have to pony up some cash to buy it I want it do do everything I need.Richard G wrote:You're still using turn by turn on the Garmin? I'd have thought you'd have learned your lesson by now and just followed the line.
Re: Android mapping app
I did the 2013 bb200 using a Garmin edge 200 on breadcrumb trail! Had to refer to the paper map I had with me many times...!

Re: Android mapping app
The issue I had was when I stopped (or going dead slow - which happens quite a lot in places on a BearBones 200!), the screen would zoom out to show the whole route on the tiny little garmin screen.
That's when the map came out...

Re: Android mapping app
I've still got a version of mmtracker running on my android it allows me to view the memory map maps I bought years ago after I tweaked the copyright label. I think it's been shut down now though
