Completely agree Bob and BTW, I've no axe to grind - I did have an Exposure branded SP fail. Exposure themselves were of no use but SP were superb and sorted me out quickly and went well beyond what I might have expected of them.

My point (inc' wink) was that it would appear that buying a dynamo is a little bit of a lottery. There's people like me that have had them fail quickly and others that have run exactly the same unit for 1000's of care free miles - I simply wouldn't bank on buying one and believing that you'll still have the same unit in 2 years time.

I do have my powerbank which is 20000mah but it'll probably only last me around a day and a bit worth of charging (front and rear lights/phone/garmin).

If you need to generate 20,000mAH per day- best of luck! Unless you are an expres train, I wouldn't bet on generating more than 10% of that per day, and that's before you go off-road.

Recently got 50hrs out of a set of lithium AAs in the Etrex, using OSM mapping downloaded free from the net. 30g for a pair.

I bought an XT hub dynamo as it was:

£65 from Germany
Serviceable and repairable by a home mechanic with out wheel rebuild
Generates more power at low speeds than any other dyanamo

I attached it to a 29+ wheel and while i was thoroughly dissapointed with the light generation i was content with the GPS charging capability off road. It kept my device (old android phone with mmtracker) fully charged and on a road section it topped up my phone too.

i found a German article that was up to date and showed efficiency and power output bench tested:

It convinced me that the XT was an excellent option so i paired it with this:

Had two sp dynamos and both have had bearings fail after a very short time of use. One never lasted more than 300 miles.

One stopped completely and would not turn the other developed side play.

Now own a SON 28 qr for the MTB and no problems so far, now also bought another to go on the Alpkit bike that I intend to get soon.

Use it with a sinewave revolution on iPhone 5s, with viewranger app as gps/mapping. Works really well.
