My daughter, having just passed her driving test, has suddenly developed a formerly well hidden interest in camping. I'd an old tent in the garage that I said I'd check out for her. It's not been pitched in at least 5 years and is much older than that. :)
Did anyone else have one of these -indeed, do you still have one?
Surprisingly large. Still in one piece. I always liked the four door openings and the double alcoves.
I wonder what a 'modern' version would weigh.
I feel I now need to acquire a couple of closed-cell mats and a petrol stove......
I looked at getting a Saunders Spacepacker in about '83 but got a
Vango Hurricane Alpha instead ( which I've still got), great tents, the
Saunders tents have quite a following on EBay and make good money
I had a Saunders Spacepacker .... late 80's.... toured the Loire Valley a couple of times with it on a Rockhopper Comp when they were rare as rocking horse poop....
Brilliant tent.
Base wasn't the most waterproof in the end and mice took a liking to it eventually :(
Never had a Saunders, but I do have a Phoenix Phreeranger EB which was my 18th birthday present. I still think it's an vaguely exciting tent (my wife doesn't), it's last outing was a garden camping trip for the kids at the in-laws farm.
I have a Spacepacker+, amazing tent, still gets used. Competes easily with a lot of modern tents. It's done many outings, podiums on KIMM, Saunders and rock & run MM's. Used a lot on Mountain Leader training and assessment courses (luxury camping). A 2 month sea kayaking trip in arctic Russia. Both son and daughter have used it on DoE.
