just having a think about mach n back & bags....
what sort of temperature rating would i want/ need?
i think my alpkit bag (can't remeber which one) + silk liner and jacket would probably be up to the job. If it's not i need to go shopping!

Re: winter sleeping bags
If it was like last year it was subsub Zero so depending on the rating of the Alpkit bag you should be ok.
I survived and I was on the edge of the tarp covering, but my full camelbak froze solid in less than 6 hours
it was a cold night!
great fun though

Re: winter sleeping bags
Dont forget your choice of sleeping mat can also play a big part to keeping warm during cold temperatures.
I'll be taking my Alpkit PD800 which is a lovely budle of joy that fits into an 8L drybag with ease. It's either that or my PHD +8C bag so I have no choice anyway!

Re: winter sleeping bags
just checked and i have a SH600 (alpkit comfort -5 °) so i reckon with a liner & jacket i should be good. can't have a third snowy winter can we (hope so, fingers crossed)
RE: mats, my current 3/4 length airic is ok but i do plan on getting a neoair before winter (confused over sizes atm though...)

Re: winter sleeping bags
PD600 here, plus a silk JagBag liner. Used to use a foam mat or a cheap but bulky Quechua thermarest-type mat, now got a POE Ether. Used the bag setup in the Scottish highlands in midwinter to great success, even with snow on the tent and drunken friend's pool of chunder outside freezing solid overnight.of chunder outside freezing solid overnight.

Winter I use a North Face Blue Kazoo, the older ones had a lower rating. If really cold a Alpkit Skyehigh 1000, it's plenty warm enough but is a little on the large size.
