Water proof flat peddle shoes
Going to ride flats in Iceland this summer.
What do the masses recommend please?
I have 5.10's but they take an age to dry and Iceland's "summer" temperatures wouldn't dry them out. I have walking boots as well.
But what ticks the boxes that dry quickly and are warm as well please?
Or in other words what shoes for tussock pushing

Just bought some 5:10 gtx guide tennies. It's from their approach shoe range, but the sole is pretty good for riding.
If your river crossing lots (you will be in the highlands) then waterproof shoes don't really matter. Carry a second pair of light shoes or sandals for the river crossing.

This was our first of many river crossings. They got considerably colder the closer we got to the glaciers..

I would go Innov 8 fell running shoes. Roclite or similar.
Light, comfy, quick drying.
Pretty flexy so go big on the size of your flats.

Waterproof .... Only problem is the big hole in the top where you insert foot. Floods from the top

I'm with Ian on this one - get some fell running shoes, they are designed not to hold water. Take the insole out for river crossings and they'll dry a bit quicker.

I missed that part. Don't do it. There aren't any for the above obvious reason.
Water proof socks if you must. But I'd go wool socks and fell running shoes. It's what I've always used on flats. And Mark Evans always rides off road with that set up. Rides up to and including the ht550

Re: Water proof flat peddle shoes
I got some long Sealskinz for Christmas and really put them through their paces in the Cairngorms on Saturday. 45 miles of constant rain/sleet/snow, many bogs and fords. I couldn't believe it when I found my liner socks were dry underneath at the end of the day. My feet were still freezing mind since my 5:10s had filled up with water.
I've got some of the Aldi ones as well which are pretty good to be fair.

Re: Water proof flat peddle shoes
Only trouble with some fell running shoes is the aggresive sole / tread. Ideally a flat pedal shoe wants to have a flat sole so the pedal pins can bite into it. What looks like a grippy sole for walking / running usually doesn't translate to grippy sole on a pedal ... I'm not saying don't use them, just try and find some with minimal tread. I used to have a pair of Innov8 that had the perfect sole but sadly no longer produced.
As for waterproof ........

Re: Water proof flat peddle shoes
When I first tried out flats I just used a pair of Merrell (the peril) walking shoes to see how I got on with them. They actually stuck to the pedals better than the 5:10s
In Rovaniemi I used a pair of Sportiva mountaineering boots with inbuilt gaiters rather than buy a set of biking specific boots. They worked fine though sometimes the pins on the pedals got really stuck in the Vibram sole

Can you find any old stock of Tevas? Weren't they supposed to be hydro-phobic or at least, quick drying?

Re: Water proof flat peddle shoes
I've got two pairs og Hi-top Teva's. Probably a little faster to dry that 5:10's but not what you'd consider to be quick. Quality seems a little hit and miss aswell, however at £15 a pair, it'd be unfair to complainCan you find any old stock of Tevas? Weren't they supposed to be hydro-phobic or at least, quick drying?

Re: Water proof flat peddle shoes
I have a well used pair of Teva Links and another BNIB pair for when those die (as they've been discontinued)
I don't find they dry particularly quickly, I've not had 5:10 bike shoes so don't have a comparison. After a wet ride they'll take days to dry with newspaper. After my last local torrential ride I nearly broke out the new pair to have a pair to ride in!

Salomon fell raiser for me with sealskin socks. Does me for the peat bogs of Shetland hiking and cycling. I tried cycling in my big hiking boots one time and it was horrible.
Re: Water proof flat peddle shoes
Thread reminds me of why I bought a boot dryer. I really like my five tens (laughably they're the "water resistant ones"), but they take days to dry naturally.
"The new synthetic upper dries overnight so you will always be ready to ride"
Nope.

I use Teva mids most of the time and Teva chair 5's in bad winter conditions,
Didn't think they'd suit riding but they do, handy with the removable thermal
Inner boot too.

Re: Water proof flat peddle shoes
As Ian F said above, I always use inov8s and flats off road. I find roclites grip well on flats and have enough grip for walking, even on muddy ground, without having the problems stu describes that can be caused by wearing more aggressive fell shoes on the bike (I gave up my experiment with walshes pretty quickly!)
Unless it's freezing, non waterproof shoes are best. I have a pair of roclite boots with a waterproof liner. The main benefit is the windproofing the liner provides as this helps
Keep your feet warm in the cold. However, they still get wet it just takes a bit longer!

Does that really fit the TLS ethos?Richard G wrote:Thread reminds me of why I bought a boot dryer. I really like my five tens (laughably they're the "water resistant ones"), but they take days to dry naturally.

Re: Water proof flat peddle shoes
Years and years ago I got jiggy with a pair of Walshes and a beltsander to the sole. Went 1 size up and a mouldable skiboot insole. Absolutely inspired*.

Given it's mains powered and about the size of two reasonably meaty hairdryers... I wasn't planning on taking it out in the field with me.

A bob trailer and a generator, that's what you need, guaranteed dry feet every morning!Richard G wrote:Given it's mains powered and about the size of two reasonably meaty hairdryers... I wasn't planning on taking it out in the field with me.

These or

These depending on how light/stiff you want. Haven't ridden with them, but they will fit like a mavic which I love riding in.
