Cheap tarps and bivvy bags?

Post by Bearbonesnorm »

Has anyone got any experience with those cheap camo tarps off ebay? I need a few solo tarps for later in the year but they need to be cheap. The ones I've seen are a good solo size at 1.8m x 2.4m and weigh in at under 400g. Looking at the pics/specs I think they'd at least handle a few nights weather but it'd be nice to know if anyone's tried one.

I'm also on the look out for cheap bivvy bags (I know I shouldn't and I know I might regret it). The cheapest I've found are Highlander Kestrel. I'm not expecting them to be fantastic and am only considering them to be 'sleeping bag covers' ... anyone tried one?

Ta and all suggestions welcome ;)

Stu - if you are looking for cheap bivis then why not get some ex army surplus ones? - a bit bulky and heavy admittedly but they take a lot of punishment and are nice and roomy. I've seen ones that look unissued for @£20 each. Failing that I've seen trekmates bivi bags in TK Max for @£15 - though I don't imagine you have one close (I can have a look next time I'm dragged in there if you want!)

I've been using what might be the tarps you're talking about, its a highlander camo ebay special. Cant remember what I paid for it (cheepo though). The quality is excelent, very well made with lots of eyelets and even ridge loops - posh. 8-)

I don't think I've seen any tarps cheaper than here:

OK - not ultralight but certainly not bad for the money!

Cheers Steve, they're the same ones (different company). As you say, not ultralite but certainly not heavy either.

I've used one of the camo tarps for a couple of trips. mainly as a ground sheet for a large 3 man shelter made from tarps and bikes. its lasted well and is still in good nick.

I'm not sure this shelter can be classed as covert.... or light..... and it didn't pack down very small....
but it made an vaguely exciting home for a week in Exmoor!
