Recommend me a jersey

Post by Dan_K »

As the title suggests, I want to buy a new jersey.

Do the merino/bamboo offerings really work and not smell? Ideally, i'm looking at something suitable for multiday adventures without being a smell hazard to the general public.

Was thinking along the lines of the Pearl Izumi Divide or Endura Baa Baa but am open to suggestions. Must have rear pockets...

I quite like my On One affair. Some kind of Merino and I can get away with it for a few days before people start to point, stare and avoid me (more than usual) ... not a bad price too.

I'm yet to find a decent compromise between stink & quick-drying, although I wonder if those merino/synthetic blends are the way to go. I find pure merino, whilst being stink-free, just hangs onto moisture too much & gets heavy and cold. I'd much rather have a synthetic base layer on multi-day trips & just put up with the stink.

Anyone tried bamboo cycling jerseys?

I own a merino t shirt and a bamboo t shirt but tbh I've never given them a proper test as they're not cycling tops. I tend to just chuck them in the wash after one wear, hence my original ask for "real life" experience. Maybe in the name of science I should go cycling in one and then wear it out and see if people notice...

Not just me then. Whilst Merino is toasty as a pull-on once the exertion is over I don't find it good to ride in. I really found this out on a boarding trip in some howies merino and a ventile jacket. Cold and wet on a stuck chairlift meant I've never used that combo again. Then again I'm also a sweat monger so tend to beat most base layers (but not stinky tho ).

I've got a couple of bamboo mix Ts and they stay fairly stink free but haven't used them as riding tops either.

Still a lover of the venerable HH Lifa stuff. It just lives forever, one of my tops must be 15yrs old and still used regularly.

Although much loved, my baabaa never feels nice to pull on, not outright itchy, but not welcoming either. My Icebreaker 260 is lovely, but severe winter use only.

Never had merino feel cold when wet, much the reverse.

Cheers for the input. I found a bargain £28 Pearl Izumi divide jersey (in black too) so have ordered it to see how it goes.

Fair enough, each to their own and all that 8-)

I don't think it's a case of emperor's clothes with merino but for me, a sweaty bugger and not into skintight gear, I've not found it to be all that. As warm gear to change into then it's great. The stuff I've used tends to be howies baselayers and some old lab gear stuff (which was a bit better tbh).

I agree the Ground Effect merino gear is brilliant but their stuff is a mix of merino and other materials, iirc.
