MYOG ... IKEA content!

Post by Bearbonesnorm »

As much as I hate Ikea it's surprising what you can find amongst the tat. This is my new stainless wood burning stove / fire basket, lovingly crafted this morning. Can be used as a basket in which to have a warming fire or as something to cook on with the addition of the spoke pot supports.

It requires some kind of legs to raise it off the ground to aid air flow from below, in this case I've used some V brake nuts (not that you can tell in the picture). All in weight is 127g on my magic scales. Just out of interest the OD of an MSR Titan kettle is a perfect fit to the ID of this ;)

Very tidy! Are the edges sharp or have you finished it off nicely? ;)

Lovingly ground and smoothed to perfection. MKII will be a 'take apart' model, so it'll pack up much easier ... should be lighter too ;)

Just for you Mr Goldie ... however I hope you realise just how much it's raining outside ;)

In a non scientific experiment, it boiled around 500ml of water in about 5 minutes with a very small handful of wood. Time was from lighting the fire, not from putting the pot on top.

Something I didn't expect to see was the air holes starting to deliver enough air for partial secondry combustion ... meaning cleaner burn. I reckon with a little 'technical nobbing about' that could be improved upon :D

Wow I'm impressed, quick boil..and for braving the rain. Although, I'm sure you were gagging to try that out :-)
