Re: HT550 Grand Depart - May 2022
Oof glad I'm not doing it now  Wonder if its Tollie path or postie path? At the moment it's the Tollie path, sounds like there's some public works at the end of it, so if that proves problematic the Postie path will be back in. And yes, Coffin Rd. I'm over from NZ for this edition. I toured m...

Re: Highland Trail 2019
Yip he knows he dropped it at the start. From Fb he's just arrived in Drumbeg, low on brake padsHas he dropped his tracker? It seems like it's still pinging updates every 4 hours but hasn't moved since just after the start.

Re: setting track width on etrex 30
cheers for all that, although it's annoying there's not an easy solution, it's good to know I'm not missing something. From reading a few forums it seems that track widths used to be wider but the software was changed about 10 years ago.
I use most of the work-arounds as mentioned above....

setting track width on etrex 30
Hi I have trouble seeing the track on my etrex when I'm on the move, mostly irrespective of what colour track I use. What I'd really like is to be able to increase the width of the line of the track but I can't work out how to do this. I realise some folks might not like a big fat line covering deta...

so I was searching for cheap gear as you do and came across http://www.conwyjester.co.uk/. Is this site for real? Is it reliable or is it too good to be true?

Re: Suggestions for a longer Scotland trip?
Last August I rode from Fort William via Kinlochewe & Laggan to Aviemore using the "old" HT route, did the inner Cairngorm loop, hooked back into the HT to the Great Glen, did the HT440 route (using a detour via Gairloach/ Redpoint) back to the WHW and rode down to Loch Lomond and popp...

Re: Garmin backlight question.
I've been playing around with these options too and have come to the conclusion it's easiest to run a helmet light. I use an etrex 30 and don't "follow" (GO function) the track, just keep the track on screen. I played with having the backlight really low, but as I'm not running a dynamo I ...

Re: Tour Divide 2016
From a mental preparation point of view I'm thinking about the route and how to break it down into manageable chunks to think about. Yeah, having similar thoughts. I'm thinking sections like: - Banff to border - border to butte - butte to yellowstone - yellowstone to pinedale - the basin to brush m...

Re: Shoes recommendation
I agree that the Shimanos are great for Scottish Bikepacking, especially the M200. I've answered my own question and decided to go with some Lake MX175's. In the process of working out sizing I discovered that my left foot was wider than the right and this had been the cause of most of my discomfort...

Re: Shoes recommendation
Interesting reading folks. I've used Shimano M200 and M162 over the last few years. Good to walk in, ride well stay in one piece. The M200's have been particularly robust. Had them for 18 months and done a bunch of back road touring in them, 2 x 1100 km bikepacking events in NZ and spent 10 days in ...

Re: London to Scotland by train with a bike
FYI I managed to sort this out. I decided to go on the Caledonian overnight so I can start riding when I get there. I booked a sleeper seat online (£50) and then emailed the customer service folk with my reservation number and they booked on my bike ( with it's own reservation #). All too easy from ...

Re: London to Scotland by train with a bike
If you find this becomes an problem for you PM me and I can sort out a bike reservation for you on the back of my pass. My concern is more that you book a ticket in NZ, arrive here and then no bike reservations left for you when you come to book at a station. Regarding routes there is a link from A...

London to Scotland by train with a bike
Hi. I'm from NZ & I'm planning a bikepacking tour around the Highlands & Cairngorms in August, using the HT550 & Cairngorms Loop as the basis of the trip. I'll be flying into London, spending a few days with friends and then I was planning on jumping on a train, with the idea of starting...

Re: HTR Cairngorm loop link.
Hi, I'm going to visiting the UK (from NZ) in August 2015. My wife has kindly let me out of visiting the in-laws in Norfolk which has left me with a week to do some riding in Scotland. I had originally thought I'd do as much as of the HTR 550 route as I could with the time I have, but I like the ide...
