Re: Tour Divide 2015 for armchair viewers
So where will the next supply point after the basin be, do you know yet? This is a quote from Scott Morris on the TD2015 thread at bikepacking.net: "The new route would hit the "town" of Wamsutter. It's a 24 hour truck stop with Subway, food, batts, showers, etc." Scott also did...

Re: Sawyer filters, any good?
Sawyer mini worked great for me on the AZT this year. The only thing Sawyer warns against is not letting it freeze, I would guess the expansion of water when it freezes can create a situation where pores in the filter would be forced open too far and may begin to allow nasties through. Overall, gre...

Re: I hate GPS
I've never had a problem uploading to my eTrex20 or 30. One suggestion is be wary of online tools, they don't care if they adhere to any standards or inject junk or ill formatted text that could break a gpx files format and render it unusable to a device. I would suggest using basecamp to make/edit ...

Re: Todays ride
Well, it's been temperate here the last few days so I've hung up my skis and made it back to the bike for a couple rides. Todays ride was 21.9 miles on the MTB, mostly pavement, it was great to be out on the bike, gorgeous day out. Two days ago I did a similar ride but went past where the pavement e...

Re: Lightweight pitch outer first tents?
I'm not sure if it'd be considered a true "outer-first" tent but the Big Agnes Fly Creek UL1 or UL2 , both have a fast-fly option when pitching so you can sleep under just the fly and not deploy the tent body. One pole, a footprint, a couple stakes, and a fly. Fast Fly Weight: 1lb 4oz I've...

Re: Gear List
After a quick review of your list these are the things that immediately came to my mind: I usually carry a fiberfix spoke or a spare real spoke. I would toss in a couple of master links for your chain for quick/easy repair. Superglue is always a must in my kit, for bike repair, human repair, and a b...

I've been dying to try out a LifeStraw. Cheap, and claims to filter out all the important nasties. Giardia and Cryptosporidium are the major ones I worry about here in the states. The LifeStraw-Go looks great, just fill a water bottle and roll. Anyone have any experience with their products?

Re: Elbow pain/stiffness on long rides
I have had a few bouts with elbow pain before, my thoughts looking back are that it seemed like when my core/back muscles started giving out on long rides I would slump forward a bit, hanging more weight on my shoulders and almost locking out my elbows, which led to an almost hyper-extension type st...

This day amongst many others sticks with me...descending down to the Colorado river and back up the other side of the valley. The section from Salida to Platoro was amazing as well. These are closely followed by not getting hypothermia descending from Red Meadow Lake into Whitefish and making it ar...

My highlight has to be finishing Tour Divide 2014. A picture of me riding up the road somewhere after the Brazos Ridge in New Mexico, and an unexpected guest hanging out in the road. Re: GPS devices
I skimped and went with Etrex 20. Holds a map and a line just fine which is all you really want when you're busy pedalling and glancing at the screen. Cool, the reason I mentioned not skimping was because after riding next to two different racers that were running eTrex 20, they both said... I shou...

Re: GPS devices
Did the Divide this summer with an eTrex 30, it did very well in some harsh/wet conditions. Acceptable battery life overall and easy to transfer files. Loved the elevation plot feature and the barometric altimeter, with that in mind I'd say to definitely take the plunge and get the eTrex 30 as oppos...

Re: Top Bags
I've been using the Big Agnes Mystic SL15 which is a top bag with pocket on back to slide in a sleeping pad for ground insulation, I have not found it to be drafty. They do an excellent job of making sure the connection point between the bag insulation/pad has overlap enough to seal the drafty areas...

Re: Tips for applying helitape
Electrical tape works well, too. it's stretchy so it contours well, the adhesive is good in cold/hot/wet and doesn't leave a residue when peeled off. Just make sure to use a couple layers if you are putting it behind a harness, it gets a lot of rub there. Taking off your logo shield from the front o...

132 'n a bit miles - Atlantic City to Rawlins, Wyoming on a loaded 29er. A beautiful ride across a big, empty space full of gravel and washboard. No wind...not too hot...passed by maybe 4 cars the whole day until the last 10 miles which was windy and full of traffic. Greetz S. This was one of my lo...

Cut the toe seam to make them tubular and you have arm warmers in a pinch.
Chain rag, I wouldn't use it for much after that though.

Re: How did you get into riding?
I hadn't ridden a bike since I was a kid. I moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado three years ago in the worst shape of my life. The first winter I was in Steamboat I started skiing again. Spring came, a buddy put an old Schwinn Moab that was way too small for me in my hands and said "here's wha...

Re: Veloviewer Premium headsup
Seems like they're going to render the free version fairly useless, only being able to track the last 10 activities once pro is launched. Would have been nice if, like Strava, they could have left a fairly robust and fully functional free version in place and just added features to make the premium/...
