I've always been put off using bottles in cages offroad as I can't keep them clean enough to drink from.

Loads of people on here seem to use them, so what obvious thing am I missing? Or is it just a case of man up and get used to grit in your teeth?

Rub the top off with a glove/hand/jersey, give it a little squirt to clear the inside of the cap and rub again to get the most out of the wasted fluid. Should be clear enough now to drink out of.

I thought that would be the case. Shame. Thought there might be some tricks I couldn't think of.

Something like this would work, I reckon.

I've got an alu screw top bottle (like a Sigg one) and unscrew the top slightly and turn it upside down so a bit of water runs out to wash the top of the bottle.

Alternatively, embrace the dirt as an upset stomach is great for weight loss
