I know that flatfishy is a hammock fan and I have one which gets used a few times a year.

At the moment I'm using a DD one which is great but I can't help be drawn to some of the more exotic examples Anyone else use one/have one?

Plan to give it a go on a canoe trip.

It was these that took my fancy http://warbonnetoutdoors.com/blackbirds.php (flatfishy dreams about them) ... they do look very nice. Some of their tarps even have doors on. Combine it with some quilts from these folk http://www.hammockgear.com and I reckon you'd have a superb winter sleeping solution, although it wouldn't be cheap.

Some nice stuff on that link Nevis. The tarps look very good value, not the lightest but you can't have everything

I've got one of their cornelius tarps too, as you say good value but not the lightest. Pretty similar to a DD tarp except the DD ones have the ridge line loops which is a nice touch.

A lot of hammock manufaturers give their products weight ratings.
Hennessey do one for the bigger boys and I'm sure Warbonnett do too.

so sleeping bags are no good with a hammock?

Sleeping bags work as a topquilt but as your compressing the bottom of the bag its becomes useless hence the underquilt to hang below the hammock and the topquilt for, er, the top.

Perhaps a 'hammock only' overnighter could be on the cards for the future

Thats three hammocks now, two suitable tarps, three underquilts and two topquilts.

My hammock has a pocket in the base to take a sleeping mat to provide some warmth.
