At the end of July I'm doing the Highlands and Glens Audax round Scotland. The only thing apart from my fitness that I'm worried about is the Midges!
I have a Alpkit Hunka ( selling soon) which I used for a couple of nights last summer in Europe and it was great, although too small and it never rained.
So I need recommendations please for a bivi bag that is light (less than 600g), has a midge net, has space for a 6 foot guy(chunky) and a thermorest xlite inside and relatively waterproof (Can take a couple of hours rain and finally doesn't cost the earth (£100-£150 max)
I've seen the Rab Ascent online which does look good but is a bit heavy.

My sleeping arrangements will be a thermorest, silk liner and a down gilet.

Your options are fairly limited. There's a few that will keep the bugs out but they don't feature netting, so rely upon you closing yourself in them ... which means more condensation.

If you can take the weight then the Ascent would be a good choice as it ticks all the other boxes. However, if you do want something a little lighter and don't mind ordering from the US, a Borah Snowyside would be a good choice - all boxes ticked, weighs 370g and costs about £110 + delivery, etc.

I have an ascent, it's good, loads of space inside and copes well most of the year. The bulk (rather than the weight) can be a bit of a pain at times.

Terra Nova Moonlite now has netting on the top part, although it seems to be inplace of waterproof material which seems odd. It is very light, likely to be a tight squeeze with the thermarest though, the older version was snug with a light sleepingbag...

That's the issue really, most bags with midge netting and low weight are only water resistant, rather than waterproof ... as I say, limited choice.

Yes but as a stand alone shelter? I'd want something with a proper 'batten down the hatches' hood and eVent or Goretex top.

I can give you the number of a guy who made me a fantastic custom Bivi with net, hood and zipper for just over a 100 if you like? he's based in Southport, I could email you some pics of it if you like?

Rab storm. 600g, breathable net, cheap. Sell on when done.
