For my dream set up. The gears haven't been invented. A rohloff (maybe pinion) that's sub 1kg.

Having had two Ti frames in my life and had both of them break within 3 years of ownership, I'm now living life quite happily on custom steel.

This has put me in the rather privileged position of actually owning my dream bikepacking bike (and luggage):

I'd go for a steel Shand too only with gears, Rohloff would be nice.

My steel Jones. Won't be changing that any time soon. Wouldn't mind some 40mm syntace rims or something similar instead of the p35s but aside from that the rest is a mix of reliable and trashable (9s XT) or buy once only kit (king bb, ti loops and eriksen post) that's just about perfect. That and the wildcat harness and tiger seat pack.
edit, it's not perfect actually. No full 135mm dyno hub available, just an extended SON that misses the wider spoke base benefits of the Jones front end. So I'd need a custom hub to sort that little issue.

I am clearly an insensitive rider having also had two Ti HTs and never felt the magic. The Alloy Spearfish is hard to beat for an all round do most things ride, but I would love a Yeti SB5c, even if it a rubbish design for storing kit on. Would have to be barking mad to spank that kind on money on a bike though...

Something like Ian's Stand up there for me, custom paint, 1x 11 XTR group set. Would have to go for something bouncy up front I think though.
Failing that a carbon Salsa Spearfish.

After getting a S/H steel Stooge earlier this year. The only way up for me would be a Ti Stooge, ENVE carbon forks, carbon bars and seat post, CK h/set and B/B, Hope Pro II on carbon rear, SP Dyno on carbon front and the rest a 1 x 10sp reliable drive train. Loving the Nobby Nics I have at the minute so would use them. Would have to agree with Scott on the Eggbeaters 11.
Dreeeeeam, dream dream dream dream, dreeeeem!!!!

I'm pretty happy with my bike, however the following things do cross my mind.

- a new paint job with a really tough finish.
- a 44mm/tapered headtube so I could run some fancy pants tapered carbon forks with anything cage mounts.
- more clearance at the back for a 29+ tyre.

To be honest if I really wanted those things that much I could buy a Deadwood or maybe a Rooster frame.

I've broken steel, I've broken carbon.

So far... not Ti. and I'm a rough lardy rider.

Its about the design and the manufacture, not the material* (as we all know well enough)

*obviously within sensible boundaries.

Fair enough, though I weigh about the same as you both combined!

2nd outing on my new Ti frame today (it's first bikepacking mission) so let's see how it survives fully loaded.

Disclaimer. The writer may or may not agree with any of the following ideas.

Bike would be a Ti frame probably Stooge. 2 x 11 with 29er wheels Maxxis a Son28 dynamo with B&M lights and usb charging system.

Bags.
Front. Imagine a dry bag that unrolls and has three maybe more tubes across it and maybe some small pockets for smaller items. The roll up size is variable depending on how much you are carrying so can be either 20l or 13l and no wider that the ‘standard’ current dry bags. Direct mounting with its own straps. Could possibly double as a mat protector or extra bit of tarp?

Rear. Same as the front but mounted on a rack. Yes a rack. Personally I think racks have been discarded too quickly in favour of seat packs so same bag front and rear with a rack on the back.

Frame bag as per what is currently available but my choice would be minimum size not full size and full length of top tube.

Other bags as required.

Then I would need a harness that would allow me to carry the front and rear bags on my back cushioning the bike strapped on the outside so on HAB sections I have my hands free for a couple of walking poles which also hold the tarp up.

An 853 karate monkey with alternator dropouts for 12mm maxle, 44mm headtube and a niner carbon fork. For the build:

I still think it'll be fine. A crack appears in the seat stay between the welds for the disc mount - overheating when built, most likely.
Unlike a certain Ti fabricator in Italy who shall remain nameless, and who would have just put a new weld over the top of the crack and call it fixed, Cotic supplied me with a brand spanking new frame within a week. Added bonus was that it had a few specification improvements to make it even betterer than the original. Possibly the best customer service experience I've ever had

I'm think I'm pretty close to my ideal setup, just the wheels that have room for improvement:

Ti Stooge, Enve fork, Salsa Ti bars, Brooks Cambium C15 (although I like the look of the C13), 1x10 SLX chainset and XT the rest.

Wheels are currently a dynamo front on Flow, Pro2 on Crest. In an ideal world I'd probably go 50mm carbon front and rear on the same hubs, but I may build a Pro2 onto a Flow so I can run a wider tyre out back.

I do need to get a full frame bag though, and I'd like to affix it to the bike in a potentially unconventional way - could I make use of the twin top tubes perhaps?
