What kind of insulation clothing are you using? Down or synthetic? Packs small lightweight. I've been looking at some of the montane tops which look good or PhD do some really nice down ones. Any thoughts?

Edit: This is for when you stop I assume, not riding. I rode in that jacket once for less than 5 mintues....so hot!

Despite some of the more interesting designs I do like mine. I also have a gilet too.

I've got a few items of clothing I need to sell really as I've lost weight and find myself wearing the top that fits me best, a Montane Fireball Smock

Will probably sell some of it, not all, and use it to fund a synthetic fill hoody

When I get off the bike, I reach for a Mont-bell Plasma 1000 down jacket. When it gets properly cold or a bit wet I supplement it by popping my Rab Flashpoint jacket over the top which has enough room to keep the loft going in the jacket. Have been wearing the Plasma in conjunction with the MB down tee I recently got from the boards here...sometimes a little too warm.

When I don't want to faff about and want a single piece to wrap up in, I fall back to my old faithful Montane Anti-freeze. It's like curling up in a duvet :) The tradeoff - Plasma jacket is 130g. Anti-freeze jacket is 420g.

For UK use i'd go with synthetic rather than down. For jackets there wont be much difference in weight/packsize.

Easier to care for in mixed (think rainy) conditions and if you get it dirty its easy to clean.

I have a Rab Primaloft Gillet which comes on almost every trip with me. Great for wearing around camp, an extra 'quilt' on cooler nights and you can ride wearing it on cold mornings.

Arcteryx nucleii hoody, packs so small I use it in the summer instead of a gillet. For winter, I have a 700 TNF down jacket for a little extra warmth

Montane Prism here - it's my emergency layer in winter, my jacket for stopping and my bivi pillow in one.

Patagonia nano puff jacket for off the bike , unless its really cold then the big rab down jacked i use for winter belaying comes out . but ye most of the time my light primaloft thing is excellent, packs down well , doesnt matter if it gets wet , ye just good !

It really depends when you think you'll be wearing it.

I've an inov8 thermoshell which is an emergency layer carried often. In case of getting very cold or a ride ending mechanical. It's thin but quite warm

I also have a PhD down smock which is lighter than the inov8 but much much warmer. No great use for wearing during riding but for use in very cold weather when stopped its toasty.

If I could only have one of them id go for a synthetic smock. Lots if bargains on the sports shoes website this week
