If like me you are er gps challenged have a look at this:http://www.rambler-info.org.uk/gps/howto/index.htm
I have learned more about my etrex in ten minutes with this than the days I have been stumbling around with Garmin startup.
My gps now displays my name and tel no for 20 seconds on start up and I can load gpx files simply by dragging between windows.
Also ran across something called cycle.travel which sorted out a problem I had trying to create a gpx from home to Starcross using National Route 2. Nothing would snap to the route including cycle.travel but the editing is so simple just moving a couple of points and it snaps to the route I want. It supposedly has a record of all cycle paths in its data base but cant see South Downs Way so make that most cycle paths. Does not look too good off road but have not played with it sufficiently yet.

Do you need a SDW gpx?
Re: GPS 101
In case it's useful to others too:

The focus is on audax, so lots on following a route. However, the the belt and braces approach (direct routing route with coded wayponts, overlaying a track) is potentially useful for anyone looking to make a idiot proof gpx file,

Got a SDW gpx but just outside Winchester it has a complete 360 in the data which I cant edit out - yet.
Just thought if I could recreate it using cycle.travel it would be a 'cleaner' version but as said no SDW shown.
Just shows the perils of following gps rather than head up looking around.
