Milky Way

My wife had suggested that we actually use some of our kit more than once  and that we should head out for some midweek bivvies somewhere in the Dales. With the north of England actually getting better weather than the south for once we headed out last night. I'd given her four possible locations, one of which she rejected as being "spooky" , but we settled on Thieves Moss above Austwick.

The Perseid meteor shower is due around now but with complete cloud cover as we set off it was looking unlikely that we'd see anything. However as we gained height the evening sun began to break through and by the time we'd set up the tarp and had our meal it was mostly clear. Then it was a quick walk round the limestone pavement of the Moss to get warmed up before getting in to our bags. By this time there wasn't a cloud to be seen and as the sun set the International Space Station slid across the sky.

The night sky was as clear as I can remember seeing it, light pollution really does ruin things for us. It was stunning and makes you understand why ancient cultures made such a fuss over it. The Milky Way was really obvious and we saw a few shooting stars emanating from the Perseid cluster.

Lots of heavy dew this morning, a decent sunrise chasing a crescent moon, then a brew and a blast back down Long Lane to the car and head to work. My wife thoroughly enjoyed it. As ever we learnt a few things and will tweek "the system" on the next trip.

I took some video, if it's any good I'll get it edited and on to Vimeo.
