Anybody know about this stuff?

I've connected this unit (etrex 30) to this pc before, same usb socket, same wire.

Now I get this



Windows helpfully suggests I replace the device

Any ideas from the computer whizz kids?

Could be a number of things...stuff I would try...

- a different cable is the first thing that comes to mind
- check the socket in the unit isn't loose (can be a solder joint misbehaving at that point)
- a reboot of the machine prior to hookup may also help
- if you've got batteries in there, take 'em out and allow the unit to be powered exclusively from the USB cable
- conversely, power the device from batteries only and make sure the device really is working
- Barter-esque swearing may help relieve some stress on you but maybe not the device

Weird...but good to know. One to keep in the back of my mind for if it strikes again.

Following a recent firmware update, my Garmin etrex 30 would fail to connect to my Mac while I had a memory card installed in the device (an iOffer OS 1:50k).

Take card out, connects fine.

I don't know why, either...
