WRT kit

Post by Ben98 »

So, put up a picture of your loaded bike ready for the WRT tomorrow! Here's mine fresh from the powder coaters, I have a small rucksack to go with it as well. Image

All that's missing from the image is the clothes I'll be wearing. Could probably skip the hut booties and runners smock and winter gloves, but it's nice to have options.

I've er almost packed, not got it on the bike yet - that's apart and in the car....

Weight a few bits and pieces, have about 3.5kg ish (1825g front / 1200g frame / 615g rear) of kit here, but also have to add onto that water, sat nav, tarp, pole. Have brought a few creature comforts this time though.

Yawn, must finish packing, early start tomorrow if I wanna miss traffic

Crikey - not sure how you got that in there... What are the largish bags on the left there. Is one the Solplex? I've had sudden doubts about the ability to pack the Altaplex down small (despite it being light....)... Which one is the Solplex, and where do you pack it?

Cheers :-)

It's a practice thing. Pack, repack, and then pull it all out and pack again. I have a feeling you've done this though. :)

In answer to your question, the 3 large bags are...

Silver cuben bag at bottom: Zpacks -1C down bag
Blue cuben bag in the middle: Zpacks Solplex tent
White cuben bag at top: Montane Antifreeze down jacket (size large)

The sleeping bag goes into the cuben bag on the front first. Squash it down and slide the tent in next. Squash those both down and squeeze in the NeoAir Xlite. It's a tight fit but it will go. Bag on the front is approx. 13 litre.

Ah, so perhaps the bags are a little smaller than I originally thought they looked, especially if you can get the sleeping bag and tent into a 13 litre bag. Do you put them in, in their existing cuben bags, or just repack them into the one bag? Are they ZPacks bags?

I think the bag the Altaplex comes in is probably an awkward shape (short and fat) for the bar harness, so I'm considering options. I'm using a Revelate Harness with the Salty Roll double ended drybag at the moment. I tend to keep my down gear in there so may not want to put a wet tarptent in as well, unless its already sealed in its own bag, which I know will then be awkward to get inside the Salty Roll. I may try to find a long, thinnish bag that I can mount alongside the Salty Roll.

Any photos of the Solplex in use last weekend? ;-)

I do indeed pack them into the main bag in their own stuff sacks. It takes a little bit of squishing to get 'em all in there. I fold the Solplex down and then roll it and put a couple of rubber bands around it. There's always plenty of room in the Zpacks-supplied stuff sack for the tent, peg bag and pole bag.

I'll snap some pics of it all in a bit and post 'em up so you can see how it all goes together. FWIW, I'm using the Revelate harness and a cuben bag I got from the classifieds here.

As to pics of the Solplex in action, I'm afraid I was a touch cam-tarded on the weekend. There's a fleeting glimpse of it in Ian B.'s video. There's a picture of it here: http://bearbonesbikepacking.co.uk/phpBB ... &start=175 ...scroll down a little and you'll see it. Snapped up on Long Mynd a few weeks back.

Out of interest, what's the advantage of a cuben bag, vs say, a strong ziplock bag?

Cuben fibre is extremely light in weight and very strong courtesy of the reinforcing threads running through it. You won't poke a hole it in as quickly as you will a ziplock bag. I used to run with Alpkit Drylok Xtra up front and was a little dubious of switching to cuben there, but it's holding up quite well.

I still use ziplocks for some items where staying dry is useful but strength of the bag won't be called into question...cash, phone, my sawyer kit and some other bits 'n bobs.

Ok...so the sleep kit into cuben bag...couldn't get more than 3 images up here, so here's a zip with the various steps in pictures:
http://www.jmsweb.com/images/scattamahs_sleep_kit.zip

I could do with a longer, narrower bag to put the two larger items end-to-end and the thermarest in the middle. I'd score a couple more inches clearance for the fork to work harder.

Ha, vaguely exciting. So they all fit in side by side... that makes more sense now. And the Solplex doesn't look big at all, hoping the Altaplex won't be much bigger.

What are the dimensions of the big bag you get it all into?

Thanks :-)

Is there a UK supplier / stockist of "Revelate Designs Harness Handlebar Bag Rack?" Or does anyone fancy banding together to buy from US?

Backcountry Biking stock Revelate stuff. There is a full list of distributors here. I've ordered from Veloista in Switzerland before (think Backcountry Biking had no stock) though may have had to pay VAT etc.
