waterproof trousers
folks,
what do you recommend for waterproof troos while on the bike, I'm bored now of getting wet and cold. not looking for over trousers as such, something I can wear all day can't be bothered with the on..off..on again of over trousers.
I'm a great fan of paramo jackets but don't know how it would fit on a bike as there stuff tends to be more walking orientated type cut.
so whats out there, what do you use...any pointers appreciated.
cheers Roddy

Re: waterproof trousers
Ex army Goretex trousers cut down to 3/4 lengths. £20 from eBay.

Mmmmmm..... Don't sound the comfiest things
Re: waterproof trousers
Not waterproof but quick drying options.
Endura do Humvee trousers I think, my shorts dry out fast enough that if it's only a shower I don't bother putting waterproof trousers over the top.
On which note if it's cold I wear Humvee shorts with water repellant knee warmers or tights (e.g. Lusso Max repel) which again get saturated eventually but dry quickly.
If it's going to rain for a long time then I use over-trousers. I have some Montane prism trousers which are good but because they are not a cycling cut tend don't sit well and form a 'seal' at the top of my boots which is a weak point. Some gaiters would solve that but it's yet another item to buy/carry!

Re: waterproof trousers
OMM Kamleika Race Pants would get my vote. I've never worn them but the jackets are superb, so I've no reason to think these wouldn't be.

Re: waterproof trousers
Johnny I have the Minimus jacket and it's good.
I didn't go for the pants/over-trousers as when I was discussing options with the Montane rep I felt something a bit heavier/hardwearing was a better choice if I was sat on a saddle and pedalling with it's associated rubbing/creasing.

Re: waterproof trousers
Ah, ok cheers. I think I'll just stick with my Altura 3/4 waterproof shorts then. I'll replace with some Gore Alp-X when they're done.ctznsmith wrote:Johnny I have the Minimus jacket and it's good.

Re: waterproof trousers
I've got the minimus jacket and trousers, and while I've not ridden in the trousers, they seem pretty robust and they are crazy light, will report back when I've used them more, which could be a while, because I don't wear waterproof trousers

Re: waterproof trousers
I don't bother either if its a shower as I also generally use Endura stuff and it drys quick enough, more looking for kit for those days you just know its going to start and not finish, so good hard wearing kit not bothered about weight as these will be worn from the start, not packed away as a just in case.ctznsmith wrote:.......... if it's only a shower I don't bother ..........
The OMM might be worth a look, I'll see if I can find them locally for a look see.
Anybody any experience of the Paramo Velez adventure trousers, there expensive but as stated I'm a Paramo fan, got a couple of there jackets and always found them comfy and do the job and they control moisture brilliantly.
any other pointers appreciated, want to make a the right choice, first time

Re: waterproof trousers
I've used the OMM pants. mainly for fell running and foot based mountain activities but they are good on the bike. a bit delicate in the seat area TBH as not designed for that sort of high abrasion that muddy MTB can provide. I tend to use a rear mud guard to minimise this. mine finally died at the ankle zips and seams so have been reincarnated as a pair of super light shorts. Just added a smear of seam sealer to back up the seam.
I replaced them with a pair of Inov8 race light pants which are also good (only lack the elastic waistband that the omms have) I'd happily recommend either.

Re: waterproof trousers
I have used the montane atomic waterproof trousers for a while now and have been surprised at how well they have worn. They are a heavier duty version of the minimus i think.
I splashed out and bought some Gore Alp X 3/4" ones in the sales but despite them working very well i have found i can only use them in summer as when i use anything bulkier than a summer shoe i cannot get them on without taking my shoes off !

Re: waterproof trousers
The OMM pants are great for walking, comfy and light, but not robust enough for riding - the arse will wear quickly, and the taping on the seams doesn't last well.
Re: waterproof trousers
Sorry I have Montane atomic trousers too, not prism.
If you're planning on it raining all day you don't have to worry about the on...off...on...off again problem.

Re: waterproof trousers
I have some Aldi trousers that i've used for the odd evening ride when I know its going to be a mud bath
Have some Montane Atomic trousers for walking and have used these for biking too, although mainly in the evening for sitting around camp
Picked up some cheap Adidas trousers (Adidas Tour Spray pants) in the sale yesterday from Halfords, down to £8. Bargain. Was planning to use them for commuting when needed, or maybe turn them into shorts as all trousers are short on me (am tall, usually come in standard lengths only)
They look like this

But I was thinking of making them look like this

Re: waterproof trousers
well I found somewhere that has the Paramo trousers, and I think they would be great from late Autum/Winter they would be too much for this time of year,
but the same place did have some 3/4 length waterproof shorts, now normally I dismissed this idea as pointless bit like waterproof shorts just why when the rest of your legs get soaking but.....I'm having a rethink on that point especially for the 3/4 lengths I can see where they would be usual so I'm going to try the Army goretex things off eBay to see if I get on with the idea.
thanks for all the pointers folks

Re: waterproof trousers
Paramo also make a thin shell trouser, the Fuera, to match the jacket/smock. Very light and pretty showerproof when treated. It's basically the Cascada trouser without the lining.
Re: waterproof trousers
Ah but its the Paramo lining that makes them work so well,
Re: waterproof trousers
Yeh, as long as working well includes keeping you warm. I can only wear mine in the depths of winter, even then not for anything too active!
I really like the Fueras, they are windproof and very light to wear, they stop feeling too "nylon tracksuit bottom" after a couple of washes and as mentioned are pretty showerproof when treated...

If you're not a fan of the army camo, you can get RAF ones in a rather fetching blue.
Like these:http://www.britishmilitarysurplus.co.uk ... 86938.html
Mine weigh about 400g, if that's of interest. There's no closure at the bottom so it mgiht be worth busting out the sewing kit.
