I'm about to make up a new rear wheel running 1x10 to supplement my SS for those longer trips. I've pretty much decided on a Sram gripshift due to an arthritic thumb. Can I use a shimano mech and cassette or does it have to be SRAM? I seem to remember mixing groupsets in the distance past but don't remember what.
Any help/advice?

Cassettes are interchangeable, as are chains, but the pull ratios of SRAM/shimano mechs are very different I think, so you have to match shifter+mech iirc

ben is correct. shimano pull is 1.1 sram 1.2. or its the other way round. but there not interchangeable. however you can botch a front mech between sram and shamino. where there is greater movement.

Ah.... I've ordered a SRAM changer, sram mech and a shimano cassette (all 10 speed). Will this work?

cassette is the same width which means that movements are smaller with each click of an indexed shifter. there is some differances in cable pull too but I don't know the specifics.

You can use a shimano road 10 speed shifter with a MTB 9 speed rear mech perfectly. but 10 speed and 10 speed doesn't work.

To do with the cable pull to actual pull ratios. In an ideal world, the shifter and the mech just match up and you're done, but in essentially you need to match shifter movements to mech movements. So off the top of my head (so these might be wrong) I think they're something like this.

SRAM MTB All speeds = 1:1 I think. Not 100% sure about 10 and 11 speed tbh. and only MTBs at that, I know nothing about the road side of things!
Shimano MTB and Road, 7, 8, 9 speeds = 2:1
Shimano Road 10 speed = 2:1
Shimano MTB 10 speed = 1.7ish:1

Dunno about the others, but your mech has to match the pull ratio above to work. So a 2:1 shimano MTB mech (commonly 8 or 9 speed) can do 10 speeds if you use a road 10 speed shifter (which is what I'm doing actually for a few reasons).

Not been keeping too up to date to be honest, so there's a few more speeds and systems available and I'm not sure about the mechanics behind them without looking them up.
