Suggestions please as to the best 29" rims for bike pack wheel-build :

Alfine 8 speed, 36 hole hub
Low weight
Standard tube, but possibly tubeless in the future
Disk only

Merlin were selling some Stans ZTR335 rims at the right price ... just looked and they're 32 hole. Shame as they're a bit of a bargain.

Stan's Crest if you're lightweight, Arch if you and/or kit are a bit heavier.

Looks like it's Stans Arch then. Now to find a bargain - Merlin deal is indeed a cracking price but I think 32 hole is probably a bit on the weak side for 75Kg & gear?

Are 29er wheels that much weaker?? My road wheels are lighter and and feature 20.24 spokes, my mountain bike wheels are 24 spokes and I weigh more than you. :? Isn't 32 spoke pretty much the standard?

Not in my experience. I have a hardtail 29er with 32spoke wheels and never had any problems with them. I raced the strathpuffer24 on it in january and they are still true. I was around 14 stone at the time and the course is hard on bikes so they took a fair beating.

That's my point, I would have though 32h would be fine.

i use bontrager rims and mavic tn719 on my wheelssets. both have held up pretty well.

the first bontrager rims did break but they got replaced under warranty, known problem with the discontinued duster rims.

i'm wary of stans' lack of eyelets particulary when loaded up. this might be unfounded - i've never used their wheels. i reality it probably means they have a shorter life span; however if you look at well built mavic wheels they last and last; could be argued they are overbuilt....

No contest for me have hammered 32 spoke Stans wheels in 29 flavour for 2 years and I hit stuff hard. Loaded trips no problem. The biggest plus is not having had a flat tyre for 2 years, all those tubes carried around for nothing. The new socket 2 version rims are one of the best bike products ever made in my view, don't want to use anything else now.

I'm running a 32 hole alfine 8 with a Stans Flow
Very string rim, been giving it some abuse and still true
Run tubeless all the time.

Just remembered I got a tube in the single speed back wheel I swap with the alfine
Had to put a tube in as the tyre sidewall was made of cheese (rocket roma)
Running bobby nicks and they are doing ok for now
