I believe the reason for doing it is that the original was faked (winch was at the top of the dam, not on the front of the land rover) and to prove it is possible to winch up a dam with a land rover.

That pic on the Elan Valley website doesn't do it justice - the front face of Claerwen dam is really steep

Slightly puzzled as to what happens when they get to the top, so will have to tune in on Sunday.

I think this one was faked also, I remember they had a massive crane on top of the dam,, I will ask the lads at work who were there for the filming.

From the scheduling info on the BBC site it looks like this is going out in tonight's episode

Perhaps the crane at the top is to provide a "top rope belay" in case the winch fails?

I was wrong,a big crane but not on the top of the dam, im not surprised that Hammond was in a pissymood that day screw doing that
