Not an apres Christmas diet thread . . . but how wide a tyre can i put on an inbred 29er? i seem to remember i just got away with 2.3.

I have my old frame in my shed and am trying to decide how i want it built up. 29+ would be nice but i think the chainstays wont allow it. . . . if I put a 650b wheel in could i go wider . . . sorry i am not near my shed or i could measure it.

(it's a slow day at work and our system is down, so i am using my time wisely and pondering bikes!)

Inbreds aren't known for having lots of clearance, you might squeeze a 40mm - 50mm 650b rim in there with a 2.8" or you might not. I think Jameso had the dimensions of the WTB Scraper / TrailBlazer 650b+ set up?

Why not leave the back alone and just fit 29+ up front? That's where the real benefit lies

Thats what I did with my new build, works pretty good with a rigid front fork - the knard tryes are pretty poor show tho, but I will be changing these
I run a Stans Flow rim in the back, what with 2.25 tyres I feel I got a good comprimise between tyre size, mud clearance and ride feel

I have a krampus. you can try my back wheel if you like?

You'd have to fetch the frame to a wed night ride, not this week though, and remind me so I bring the right bike

On a 35mm rim a 3" knard is about 73mm but I think the height will beat you too. It wont fit in a salsa el Mariachi. That one just fits a 2.4 ardent on a 45mm rim.
I'd use a 29+ up front and a 35mm rim 2.4 rear.

a 35mm rim 2.4 rear
I'd be very surprised if that'll fit bit I've never tried it, so you never know.

Also depends what drop outs. If they are slotted then you could get a bit more width.

Ps. I'm glad you started your OP with that introduction as it was exactly what I thought when I saw the title :-)

Tried a 2.4 ardent in both a slotted drop out frame and a vertical drop out frame, both on 24mm rims. Its fits but its tight (like 3mm clearance) and soon clogs with mud. A 2.25 is far better.
My Fargo actually has more clearance. Anyone after a large inbred frame?

on one say you can fit 2.4 but recommend 2.3 max, clogs up quick 2.25 was best
