Gearing down for going up

Got my cx bike and want to use it for more touring and bike packing. Currently the crankset is fsa gossamer 46/36 and is a bugger on the hills to get up. I have just ordered a more friendly 42/28 sram truvativ. Both are bb30 but one is mtb and the other cx. I'm hoping apart from trimming the chain down to size it will be just be a case of resetting the limits on the front mech. Has anyone done this yet with any success?

I fitted a mountain bike double and 11-36 cassette to my Arkrose ... it's now more like a lightweight mountain bike than a heavy road bike and much more suited to what I use it for

vaguely exciting and glad to hear it. Did you have to change any of the other components to make it work? I'm hoping to have it ready for the ford fiesta.

No, but I'm running friction bar end shifters.

if you are going from cx to mtb then you may need to add some spacers in the bottom bracket. don't know how tht works with bb30. with an external one you can just unscrew the cups in slot on the spacers. to go from 68-72mm or what ever the standards are.
