I've a number of Montane lightweight waterproofs which do the job in summer, none of which hack it in incessant rain though.

I'm looking for something to keep me dry if it hammers it down at Strathpuffer.

Weight isn't a consideration, waterproofness is.

Any suggestions?

Me too. Just reproofed by 4 year old goretex jacket it has been pretty good but wonder if there is something next generation better.

The thing about Paramo's is that their breathability is unsurpassed compared to all the "membrane" jackets . I wear it all day in winter over just a thin baselayer.
The only thing i find is the cut of Paramo stuff isn't ideal for my shape and they are a bit heavy as they tend to have lots of pockets / vents
To sort this i had a custom one made by Cioch on the Isle of Skye from the Paramo material. Long arms, long back, shorter front, reflective tapes sewn in, No pockets, no vents, just a 3/4 zip on the front, Hood is a life saver when the weather gets biblical ( i had it made snug to go under my helmet ). £175.

The 2013 model in all black is £31 at Merlin. I've not tried it in a full on rainstorm yet but it's got a fleecy lining. I reasoned that the wicking liner might make it nicer either if it does start to eventually leak or get sweaty. I also wanted something less like a flappy bin bag.

I've had an Endura Stealth for the past 3 years and used it in really poor weather. Out of all the jackets I've had over the years this has been the best in terms of waterproof, windproof and keeping me warm. On most occasions even in the winter I don't even bother with a mid layer. Just make sure you don't put it in the washer with detergent as it will damage all of these qualities.

I just picked up a Berghaus Vapour Storm from Sport Pursuit (£115). Been fortunate enough to not have been rained on so can't tell you how great it is but reviews seem promising.

Bought it based on how great my Berghaus Temperance 2 jacket has been for hiking.
3 layer gore-tex is great for keeping you dry but i've found loses breathability as soon as it gets wet and the holes effectively get covered - although I get pretty hot so it could just be me. There's only so much a jacket can do.

I only ever wash it with tech wash and then reproof it with nikwax to aid beading.

Have found that once wet, it takes an age to dry generally due to the thicker material although nothing reaches through to the skin.

I also have a montane singletrack jacket proofed with nikwax. Whilst it isn't classed as waterproof, it does seem to keep me dry enough on a ride and it dries very fast.

If you're racing, sweating out may be more of an issue?

Never tried the Paramo stuff.

How does it size, I like a tighter fit.

I have a medium rich, its a tighter rather than looser fit on me.

I'd wonder about arm length if you go too small.

Thanks Dave, I'd wondered about that. I've chanced a small though at a good price. Hopefully it doesn't need to go back.

Iv got a ran event myriad jacket its vaguely exciting and I just wear layers underneath mainly merino

I'd stick with either Gore Tex active shell, event or polartec neoshell fabrics abs layer up for the winter and you'll have a jacket that can be used in the summer too. I've used an arcteryx active shell for 2 years without complaint

Not used paramo but most people I speak to say it's too hot to use in the summer

Super breathable, and very well cut - although if you want pockets or a more relaxed fit, then a Alp-X jacket is a better bet.

I have a Goretex Active Shell jacket too - but I bought the Fusion as I find the Oxygen is too much of a "racer" cut.

Super jacket. Gore really took a massive step forward in breathability with GT-AS and I'd say it's now as good as eVent.

Another vote for Goretex Active Shell, find it 'breathes' loads better that the old Paclite..

So has anyone done a comparison between the Paramo Ciclo and the GORE-TEX® Active Jackets (Alp-X or Fusion)?

Not for cycling, but I've a Paramo Fuera Smock that I bought for hillwalking.

TBH, I'm completely underwhelmed.

I had some Paramo trousers, too hot unless it was Baltic, never properly waterproof and ripped at the first sign of a thorn, etc. Wouldn't buy again.

Funkier jacket did 5hrs today in rain & fog with no probs.
