Fractured collar bone

Post by ericrobo »

Crashed heavily on a local ride on Friday, whizzing along at 20mph, absolutely in my element, when the front wheel skidded, and down I went,,, slid along on my right shoulder with crash helmet saving me from something worse. In a bit of pain, but I got myself together and continued some 10 miles home, including rocky ST. Opening/closing gates was the bad bit.
A&E yesterday for xrays, chipped a bit of bone on the end of the collar bone.
Anyway I thought I would post this to see what advice is around. Best way to recover etc. In my book I think it's best to give injured parts some movement to make sure it gets plenty blood.
Any advice welcome.... (but may be ignored  )

I full on broke mine a year gone May. They only gave me a sling and said not to worry about using it if you can - basically if it doesn't hurt too much then your fine. Despite having the two broken ends of the bone waving around at each other with no plate or proper support it joined in 5 weeks and I was pretty much using it to its full after a further 5. If you've only chipped the bone you should still have a fair bit of mobility so you should be able to do most things - that said I've twice chipped bones in my wrist and the resulting rough edges still give me gyp when its cold / low pressure. My problem was tying shoe laces and sleeping - I had to sleep lying on my back for 6 weeks which I don't do well at all. In terms of fitness I got a mate to set up my turbo trainer and was using it a week after the initial injury. I tried to do bicep excercises to reduce muscle wasteage but I don't think they made much difference. Just try to keep moving it and take paracetemol and ibruprofen together.
