I've got a Blizzard survival bag (the ones with the honeycomb structure between the silver layer), which remains in my pack on long day trips where I don't have a bivi. However, I'm planning a ride which might involve some impromptu dozes or an overnight if I'm too burst to continue, so was thinking of using this as my all in one sleeping bag and bivi. Has anyone used one in anger other than in an emergency? Is it possible to get an alright night's sleep in one or are they are purely emergency product? I'm just thinking that at 400g it's minimal weight compared to the 950g of my bivi and down bag combo, which I might not even use.

They're not breathable so you can't really sleep in any clothing as it'll end up wet ... they are fairly warm though. Once opened, the packsize is pretty big, certainly bigger than most 1 - 2 season sleeping bags.

I'd rather carry the extra weight and know I can sleep if required.

Thanks. Packsize isn't too much of an issue as it'd go in a drybag in my saddle harness, but condensation could indeed be a problem. Wet clothes means I'd potentially need another set - think I'll go with one set of clothes (the classic dirtbag approach) and my bivi kit. The forecast for this weekend is rain though so it might be a case of taking a synthetic bag which adds even more weight.
